Accurate, but with marginal audio signal
Excellent and accurate wall scanner. Does locate studs, metal, electrical accurately. I have checked accuracy with two other also excellent scanners, so the confidence in the accuracy of the unit is high. There is a visual display and an audio signal designed to alert to the center of the stud, however, the audio signal seems to be designed for a cat rather than a somewhat aging human. You may need to relay on the visual cues, or use some electronic enhancement for your hearing. Maybe a trained dog ?

Good product - shipped without package box
Seems like a good product - played around with it. However, it shipped without being packaged. They simply slapped a sticker on the item's box and shipped it.

BOSCH GMS 120 Stud-Finder
A simple magnet has served me well as a studfinder for years. Anticipating an install of a floating shelf bearing 100 Lbs ... priority was to hit center-stud as much as possible and also avoid electrical wires with the 2 1/2" screws. Have so much appreciation for the Bosch tools I've accumulated over the years that with Bosch offering a studfinder that was all the research I needed. My drywall is light to medium textured. For studs the GMS 120 gave me different center-points for the same stud with variations of up to 3/4 of an inch, and so this was only slightly helpful towards my desire to confidently locate the center of the stud. As far as finding live wires, I get the impression from reviews that there doesn't seem to be any manufacturer making a studfinder that reliably locates live wires, at least for under $300, and that at least for me was true with the GMS 120. It indicated a broad proximity of live wire but only very broad. On same day I received the Bosch and found it lacking, I headed on over to H.D. and based on favorable reviews picked up a Franklin M210 studfinder. Very favorable experience and felt it gave me a better indication of the studs true center-point, and same for locating live wires. Not returning the Bosch as it is a good tool, and using it along with the Franklin M210 cross-checking the other I did finally feel I have a good idea where the live wires are located. Again neither of these studfinders excelled at finding live wires in my opinion but it can be done. Ended up being confident that the horizontal run of the elec. cable was located in the wall between 18" and 26" off the floor ... good enough, but between using both of these two higher cost studfinders I thought I'd achieve more specific results. So in my particular case with my textured walls the Bosch GMS 120 performed acceptably and with patience got the job done. So now I've got both the Bosch and the Franklin to use in tandem for next time. However if I could only use one of these two, it would be the Franklin M210.

Works great
Works as advertised so far very simple to use. Only had it for a short time we'll see how it holds up

Terrible on wiring
Would not recommend this product for finding electrical wiring in a wall. Did not work at all on electrical wiring.

Really hoping this would have been better...
Gosh, I'm on the fence with this unit, and disappointed in myself that I jumped the gun before the Amazon reviews were in. If you buy this unit, by all means purchase from Amazon or another reputable retailer with a good return policy in the event you are not satisfied with its performance. I'm reserving the right to upgrade this 3-star "It's OK" review at a later date, but for now (after a couple weeks of ownership), this is where I'm calling it. I bought the GMS120 to replace a couple of older Zircon units that proved OK on drywall over fir framing, but I've moved to a more challenging climate of plaster walls, some with wire mesh. But first, on drywall, the unit has been hit or miss. I broke it in on a wall that's open on the back side (so the framing is exposed), and I'm not getting the precision I've come to expect with the center-finding Zircon unit I own (which has also been hit-or-miss). Where the Zircon projected a finely focused LED beam along the calculated stud center, this Bosch unit gives a LCD "bar graph" display plus a 1/2" wide lighted circle that changes from red to yellow to green -- so the user is responsible for tracing a circle, or drawing a crosshair inside the circle, to note this location. The indicated center of the stud is often not repeatable, so it takes a number of back-and-forth scans to get a good feel for where I should be drilling. And on the drywall over metal stud walls at work -- big disappointment; no usable readings. On plaster, I've been confounded by this unit's inability to locate a stud correctly. The instructions recommend placing paper or thin cardboard backing behind the sensor to assist with the uneven thickness / density of plaster walls, but the 1/4" lath appears to be too much to overcome. Never mind when chicken wire is in the mix. I'm going to keep playing with this and find a hopeful solution, as according to the reviews out of various European publications I've read, this shouldn't present an insurmountable challenge. Worse yet, the current sensing function seems to be entirely non-functional. I've traced over known, energized wire locations with nary a *beep* from the scanner. Another reviewer states that this current sensing function is active in the wood scanning mode (I stated contrary previously and stand corrected), but I've yet to receive an accurate current warning from this scanner, regardless of mode selection). If I recall correctly, the Zircon stud finder sensed electrical current when in stud finding mode, so where two passes are required with the Bosch, the Zircon would somewhat reliably call out a live wire while in the process of scanning for studs. This function works if I place the sensor directly on live Romex or even a power cord plugged into a wall socket, but once drywall is sandwiched in the middle, readings disappear. And the LCD display... what was Bosch thinking? There's a lot of info on the display, and it's backlit (user selectable on/off -- yay!!) but the viewing angle turns to zero if I hold the scanner just a FEW INCHES below eye level -- ZERO, as in INVISIBLE -- it appears the thing powered off. Higher than eye level, no problem, but lower -- even with the backlight on, it's completely unreadable. Seriously, Bosch? This may not sound like a big deal, but consider for a moment how you hold your arm while using one of these gizmos. I can't speak for the wider user base, but I feel most natural / comfortable with it at chest / neck height, exactly where the display goes blank. The scanner comes with a rather thorough multi-language instruction manual, which shouldn't be necessary for something so simple. Nevertheless, it's true to Bosch's tradition and appreciated. It also comes with a tight fitting canvas-style case which truly could be just a tad bigger. I'm holding out hope that I'm missing something important here and I'll grow to love this unit, based not only on Bosch's reputation, but on the stellar reviews I've read in various trade mags. Honestly, I'm not seeing this as being any better than the scanners available from Zircon, and the half-viewable LCD display is an absolute disappointment. My last stud finder purchase was 6+ years ago, and after reading some great "pro" reviews about this unit, I was fully expecting that the state of the technology had greatly advanced versus the Zircon that was already in my tool bag -- especially coming from Bosch! I'm in the process of contacting Bosch customer service to see if perhaps I have a lemon, because again, my experience has been nothing like the reviews I've read proclaiming the GMS120 to be the best in class.

Read the manual carefully and use it the right way
Got this a year ago and the first times I used it, I found it imprecise and difficult to use. I've 4 different stud finders (believe it or not, I received 2 as a gift while I was renovating). Then I read the manual more carefully and learned that you have to pass over the same stud several times (without removing the device from the wall) and more you do it, the device calibrates and become more precise. Since then, I'm only using this device as it is very precise. Another tip, move it slowly. Only 3 stars for easy to use and 4 for Value for money as it is a little too expensive.

Absolutely perfect stud finder.
Anyone that said they don't understand how to use this, please take the bad reviews with a pound of salt, not a grain. I'm fairly new to reno's and fixing up houses. But this thing works great. Tried it on finding metals, live wires, wood studs. And I'll be completely honest, I didn't read the instructions at all.

Not the most sensitive ofr the price
For its price tag I was expecting something more sensible. It is good when it works and terrible (or I don't get how to use it) when it does not. For instance, my place is made with metal studs and, although it works, it experience a hard time to precisely detect those. However, my brother's place uses conventional wood studs and there are places around his house where this finder simply doesn't work. Curiously, those walls are dark painted (not the colour affects each but the paint composition might play a role here) and manual does not mention anything about painting interfering with measurements. Again, in his home, where the walls are covered with lighter colour paint or wallpaper it works better than in my place made with metal studs. Overall it seem durable and very well construct, but in practice it is not as sensible as the other cheaper one I have (that unfortunately only works with wood).
