Heavy, cold, and fewer features compared to the Zebco 33's from the 1960's.
I've been using Zebco 33's since the early 1960's, and I used all the features. This new model has no reverse reel wind feature, and no clicker/alarm to tell you when it's unwinding--and I rely on those two features when I set a reel down. They tell me when a fish is taking line out, while not providing very much resistance so the fish can tell there's a danger and drop the bait or hook. Still, if you don't need that feature, this is a fine reel, although colder to the touch, and heavier to hold, than the old 33's from 60 years ago. I appreciate the double handle. I'd prefer the drag be a star wheel on the right side instead of a knurled wheel inset into the top, but I can live with it. Be prepared to occasionally have issues where the line's trapped inside by other line, resulting in casts that hang up slightly internally. It's a spincasting reel standard problem. A little reel oil right on the line can help free it up for casting.

1st one was broken
I bought this as a Christmas present for my husband. The 1st reel was broken on the inside. I returned it and was sent a replacement reel and it is in great condition.

Been a good reel for wife even though I broke one of the crank handles. Salt water will ruin the spin spool. Had to sand it back smooth to cast again after one use in salt water to catch bait.

Reel Works As Needed

Not a very hardy reel
I bought this Zebco because it sounded like a good quality, simple reel at a good price point. First the good news. It is a good reel. It works well and reeling is very nice and smooth. The bad news is that while fishing it must have gotten a little wet (not submerged or anything just wet) which is not really that strange for fishing. I made the mistake of not cleaning it as soon as I got home I guess so that is a strike against me too but when I finally went to clean it, that is where I ran into some problems... There are two main sections to take off: 1. The spool line cover - this is what you always need to be able to take off to change the line etc... 2. The back cover - this is what you need to take off only occasionally in order to really clean and grease the gears. I could simply not get the front cover off. I tried everything I could think of other than smashing it with a hammer and it moves a tiny bit but just will not come off no matter what. I guess there must be some corrosion that keeps it from coming off but if so, they should use this magic corrosion to keep parts attached to rockets during takeoff because its just not going to budge. The crazy thing is that the back cover comes off very easy.. in fact too easy since nothing like a screw is keeping it in place and it has to be pried off. Once pried off, gears cleaned and pushed back in place it seems to hold ok but can come off while handling the reel. (i.e. while trying to twist off the spool cover on the front) So front cover that you need to be able to take off = no way Back cover that you want somewhat secure to protect gears = pry-off that doesn't stay on very well after taken off. Once again I take more than 50% blame for this since I didn't clean it right away but these Zebcos are usually bought for kids or occasional fishers.. so keep in mind that if this reel gets wet it might become disposable once the line finally breaks or needs replacing.

Front metal cap on reel would not fit properly.
Front reel cap not put together right plastic locking and seal piece stuck inside metal cap. Had to get it out as it was stuck inside. After a lot of time got it out and reinstalled the right way so you could lock the cap on tight to the rest of the reel. Order two reels had to do it to both. Is there no Quality Control at Zebco they used to make awesome reels I don’t know if these are going to last ?

Great value!
Paired this reel with a 20 year old ugly stik rod. I had to modify the mounting foot on the rod to install the reel. Extremely pleased with the result. After adjusting the drag, using this rig on a local pond was too much fun, easy casting action and line lock, smooth quiet reeling in. Made me feel like I was 10 years old again. Would certainly buy again.

Fun To Use
I bought this reel at the beginning of the summer, it’s not the quality of former Zebco 33’s prior to being built in China. A smallmouth bass, 1 pound or more, makes the reel feel like it’s binding. This causes you to pull the fish with the rod alone and then reel the slack as the rod moves forward all while trying to keep pressure on the fish. This greatly raises the chances of the fish popping the hook. After about a month, the internal gears seemed to develop a “clunk” on each rotation of the handle. I haven’t taken the reel apart yet to determine what’s causing the problem. Overall I have a nostalgic love for these reels, but quality vs price is not there. For the same money, or less, I can by an open face spinning reel of much better quality like the Shimano FX Update: So that clunk went away over time, I used this reel off and on over the summer along with my open face spinning reels landing over 500 fish this season, mostly smallmouth bass. Pros: This reel became huge fun to fish with. Can be very accurate casting, especially with the ability to use the button as a line break. Outcasts my spinning reels, no joke, my furthest casts we on this reel. Cons: Doesn’t like braid, mono or copolymer makes it happy You need to clean under caps every couple of outings if you want to prevent rust, the close face will retain some water.
