A solid, no nonsense reel for Trout, Smallmouth bass, and panfish
Barstock construction, Hardy Click Pawl Internals, and a full cage for less then $100! We don’t need Abel pretty, we need Barstock tough! Pure Fishing owns Pflueger, Hardy, Greys and more. They’ve bumped Pflueger into a higher end market at blue collar prices. I Trout fish the Appalachian Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park where you won’t find a more unkind environment to a reel for fly fishing. Being among oldest mountains in the world and being a temperate rainforest in excess of 60 inches per year of rain what we lack in height we make up for in steepness and tangles of rhododendrons ( called Rhoddo hells) . This makes blueline streams full of pocket water, steep cascades. waterfalls and slick rocks. If you do any kind of real mountain blue line fishing you’ll know you need a reel that will suffer the abuses of falling , getting bumped and slammed against hard rocks. In this a Barstock contructed reel is tough and sensible. Click pawl reels are a trout lovers dream. Why any trout fisherman needs a disc drag is beyond me other then it’s the newer style. Click pawls have proven themselves since the late 1800’s Improved with an adjustable spring tension system this reel has worked for me from 8” Mountain Brook Trout to 25” kype jaw monster Rainbows and browns. The 1st time you hear a click pawl scream when a big boy runs you’ll feel the adrenaline rise with the smile on your face. Full cage design means whether you use a traditional leader, a euro style mono rig or an old Appalachian fishing line for high sticking that the line is going to be jam free always. A no frill black design that I like over fancy reels the coating is strong but can be still subject to scratches and nicks. Shows the reels and my adventure scars and I dig it. To me, for the money at the current 90 clams I currently see it at( $35 less then what I paid) you won’t find a better reel.

Awesome reel, perfect for all of your Fenwick fly rods
This is the best value fly reel that money can buy. Solid construction and craftsmanship and has the same “insides” (drag, springs and components) like you find on a much more expensive Hardy reel. Good drag and a nice rim you can palm to bring any freshwater fish to the boat. I have a bunch of great vintage Medalists from the 40s and 50s and I love these old reels but these new ones are better!

3.5 stars.
I’ll try to make this quick. What this reel gets right: - machined aluminum - tight tolerances - not overweight What this reel gets wrong (IMO): - inadequate drag/drag range - super-cheap looking spool cap (cheap screen printing looks like it will eventually wear off from normal use) - cheap looking/feeling plasticky reel handle This relaunched Medalist could have been really great. It neither looks nor feels like a $130 reel to me. I’m keeping mine because I only paid $78 for it as an Amazon Prime Return, but would have been more disappointed and probably returned it if I paid more than $99 for one new-in-box and this is what showed up at my door. Improve the drag, replace the cheapo spool cap, upgrade the handle— or lower the price. Better yet, do all four and you have a winner. (And, Pflueger, please stop milking your brand.) UPDATE: I discovered the click-and-pawl mechanism in my reel was incorrectly assembled. I carefully disassembled it and repaired it myself. Now it’s better, still not great, and the reel still reeks of “cheap” with the plastic and painted and printed components giving it a mass produced “everyman’s” (Walmart) aesthetic, but at a triple digit price point. I plan to modify mine with an upgraded handle and more attractive caps and see if the drag tension can be improved further. Thankfully the machining is good so it’s worth making the effort.

Simplicity of design
This new design is a great change from the old medalist line. There is nothing simpler than a click and pawl drag system and it always works as intended no matter what the enviorment is. I have had 500.00 dollar fly reels fail at a critical point because of a small amount of sand but this will be the timex of fly reels for years.

Well made click and pawl reel. And a touch of nostalgia.
Nice well made reel. Hard to find quality click drag reels. The spool does not wobble on the arbor and the tolerances are very precise. I paired this with a 7 1/2 foot glass rod and it balances very well. Same with the 8 1/2 graphite. When fish make a run, well, the sound, it makes me smile.

Modern touch on a classic reel
Nice reel! I paired this with an old Fenwick fiberglass rod my grandfather had in his garage. It balanced great with the 7'6" 5wt. Has a nice sound and classic look to it. For a trout reel you can't go wrong. Only complaint is it has a weirdly small arbor requiring a large amount of backing in order to fill up the reel. I ordered 100ft of 20lb backing and I really should have gone with 150ft. No bid deal I'll fix it sometime in the future and that doesn't effect the performance of the reel just adds a little unnecessary weight.

Nice classic fly reel
Its a handsome reel . It dose the job . But it's not a 130.00 dollar reel .

This is what reels should be
I think we have got a little lost with all of these crazy techno graphite nasa engineered drag systems. - Click and Pawl drag, with palm assist is simple and way more fun. The machining on this is like a Hardy. Full frame - perfect for thin running lines that might get jammed in your standard half frame reels.
