Nice modern battery powered quartz movement to revive a family heirloom wall clock

I have a German-made pendulum wall clock that my parents bought in the mid 1960's. The original precision mechanical timing and chime movement was never cleaned and the clock had not worked properly for years. A professional cleaning job was estimated to cost at least $100. Instead I replace the mechanical movement with this battery-powered movement. The pendulum is just for "looks" -- the actual time-keeping is done by the quartz crystal inside -- like any modern watch or wall clock. This movement keeps very good time.. The hands provided with this new movement are small and unassuming. You can buy bigger hands at many craft stores, but most of those were too large for my old clock's face. The "hub" connections for the original clock hands are a different style than the modern hands. My solution was to clip off the "hubs" from the original hands, clip off the "points" from the new hands, and then graft the ornamental original hands (minus their hubs) onto the remaining parts of the new hands using some silicone glue. The attached picture shows the result. Per the instructions of the new battery-powered movement, the pendulum will stop swinging when the single AA battery is getting low and in need of replacement. However the clock will continue to keep time in this situation. I chose this movement as I wanted a silent clock. There are other versions of this movement that include a digital chime feature using a small speaker.

Saved! Don’t discard your valuable clock face.

Easy to replace dead clock mechanism to this new. It surely saved any valuable clock face instead of trashing it.

Not what I wanted.

This product came on time and well packaged. I returned it because it didn't fit the application. This was a replacement for a hand made wall clock and didn't fit. Shaft, hands and pendulum all need to be correct so measure correctly before ordering. Difficult sometimes to find exactly what you need.

High quality.

I ordered the wrong kit and was not able to use because the shaft length was too long to fit into the glass covering the clock face. However, the product seems to be high quality and contained everything needed to repair / build a clock.

Works great, hands puny

Works perfectly as a direct replacement for the movement in my pendulum wall clock that failed. Since it was a near identical direct replacement of an existing movement, I was able to re-use the original hands and the original pendulum too. The hands provided with the movement are too small for any clock larger than a small desk clock.

Pendulum part of the unit lasted all of 5 minutes

The clock mechanism part of this works well. Seems to keep good time. Disappointed that the pendulum part does not swing.

A very good choice for an electronic movement

I bought three of these movements to put in small Shaker-design cottage clock cases (14" high x 9" wide x 4"deep). My main concern was whether the pendulum rod could be shortened enough for everything to fit inside the case and still be convincing. No need to worry - even though this was the "short" version, I still had to cut the pendulum shaft down by 3 inches. In this case I did not remove the artificial adjusting nut at the bottom; rather, I cut the top off at the hook end, and then bent a new hook. Otherwise, mounting was very simple and easy. I matched it to a clock face from Lee Valley (which also provided suitable hands which fit). They all worked perfectly right off the get-go, and the pendulum swing still turned out to be quite wide and noticeable. My only issue is the short hand length: 2" for the minute hand and 1 1/2" for the hour hand. My clock face, at 7 1/2" was a bit too large for these and required longer hands. The movement is also capable of driving a second hand (also included in the package), but I didn't use it because it was not appropriate to this installation. Also, the hands are very light in colour, and, in most applications, will require a coat of flat black paint. The good news here is that the shafts are all standard size and mounting style, so suitable hands and faces can be obtained from Arek's Murray Clock Craft or Lee Valley, and they can be used with your application with no modification. Shipping was very quick (I had them five days after ordering), and they arrived in perfect order. My final and best comment: my customers love them!

From America

Came all the way from America and it works. Required to replace a mechanism in a clock bought some years ago. Needed to paint the clock hands as being brass coloured they didn't stand out against the white clock face.
