Thick socks enough wool
Thick fluffy socks with enough wool blend to keep your feet happy.

Great socks, but very tight at the top...
I love these socks, but have a lighter-weight pair that I prefer because the top band of this pair is very tight. I have slim ankles with medium-width calves. Disappointing for the price... but hope they may loosen up in the near future. Very warm though...

Great heavyweight cold weather socks--comfortable and warm!
You'd be surprised how difficult it is to find good cold weather socks. Before we get to that, however, I should run through my 'credentials' and how I became such a demanding consumer of socks. If you're going to be taken seriously as a critic you have to have credentials and here are mine: I grew up in Utah on the foothills of Salt Lake City. At my house, we received an average of 100 inches of snow a year which is four times the national average (28 Inches a year). I spent my free time skiing and snowboarding in the canyons surrounding Salt Lake City where they receive an *average* of 538 inches of snow per year. I love the mountains and snow and spend a good chunk of the year where I can enjoy both--Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Lake Tahoe. I have always been extremely picky about my winter socks. You really have to be--if not, you'll have wet cold feet all winter. Worst case scenario, you'll get frostbite. Bottom line--I know my winter socks. So why is it so difficult to find good winter socks--and particularly online? I usually buy 'brand name' socks from major outdoor retail stores or one of the top manufacturers in snowboarding. I've tried ordering some winter socks lately but there has been one recurring problem--many aren't long enough for any serious winter wear. This is a bigger problem with socks that bill themselves as 'boot socks'--I've tried ordering five pairs of boot socks in the past couple of months. Only one of the five were of sufficient length to actually function as boot socks. I've had better luck with ski/snowboard socks but there are different issues. I ordered a pair a few weeks ago that claimed to be wool with spandex but seriously felt like kitchen plastic wrap. Not very comfortable. They were waterproof, but not very warm. The moral of this story is that it's not easy to find winter socks that 'check all the boxes' when you aren't able to feel them and eyeball them in person. These socks, however, are excellent. Not a huge surprise given Merrill's expertise with outdoor gear of all types. They're best known for hiking shoes and similar footwear which makes it a natural that they'd make quality socks. They're attractive in a burly utilitarian way and they look extremely well made. The fabric also feels great. The best mix for winter socks involves wool of some sort combined with acrylics like nylon and spandex. That's exactly what you have here. The socks are very comfortable--I'm actually wearing them as we speak. They're good and stretchy, but not binding. Their warm, but not foot sweat inducing. They're so comfortable I'll probably wear them to bed tonight. Merrill says in the product description that they have 'breathable mesh ventilation zones' and they definitely work. I haven't had the chance to actually take them out in the snow but I see no reason why they wouldn't perform great. They're a proper height for winter sports activities, they're extremely comfortable, well made and feel like they'd be durable as well. Very highly recommended!

Good socks
These are good, comfy socks for the most part. The bottom fits really well but the top of the socks is a little bit tight. I think they’re a little pricey for socks.

OK performance, potentially odd sizing
Fairly thick and cushy throughout, so if your boots/shoes are snug with “regular” socks, they may feel cramped with these. I haven’t worn Merrell socks before, and these do feel true to size, but their small/med/large seem to have a huge size range. According to the chart, their US sizes cover: s/m 8 half sizes m/l 6 half sizes l/xl 6 half sizes So if you’re unlucky and fit at the high/low end of a range, they may fit tight/loose. For comparison, Icebreaker sock sizes cover 4 half sizes, Darn Tough socks cover 4-5 half sizes, and Smartwool covers 6. Also note that a size 9 doesn’t fit anywhere on the chart, jumping from a 8.5 to 9.5. Breathability and heat/moisture regulation is… ok? It’s not as good as my 60+% merino socks from the aforementioned brands, but better than plain cotton or pure synthetics. It’s been a while since I’ve worn crew socks, but if you have calves, the tops of these do tend to eventually sag/scrunch down over time.

Super cozy and warm
These certainly live up to the Merrell name. Soft, plush, and well fitting. Well made. A bit pricey for socks. A great product for your money. Would make a great gift. 100% recommended!

Thick, warm crew socks, but a little tight at the top
These socks are really warm and thick. The material is good quality, not itchy. My only issue is the the top band is a little small. It would be fine if you have thin calves, but if not it's going to be snug. I ended up giving these to my 13 year old son who has a thin build, and they fit him perfectly.
