Every Rose Has Its Thorn
A thorough study of the reviews revealed some who pointed out installation difficulties with this Kohler Choreograph shelf. In the end, I decided to take a chance even though costly damage to the tile in the bathroom shower was a possibility. The shelf has a simple and sleek design that was quite appealing to my wife and me. We ordered two of them to be installed adjacent to one another in an offset manner. Before the point of no return of drilling holes in the tile, I assembled both units as a dry run by placing the screws in what I will call the cleats (bracket that is screwed to the wall) and then slipping them on to their mate attached to the shelf. Unfortunately, one of the two shelves were defective. See the Installation Guide on Kohler's website to understand this clever, but potentially problematic attachment configuration. The design for this unit involves a fairly tight fit where the cleat meets its mate on the shelf. This leaves little tolerance for machining. On the defective shelf, the countersunk holes in the cleats were not deep enough to accommodate the screw heads. As a result, the screw heads ended up protruding above the surface of the cleat preventing the cleat mate on the shelf from sliding onto the cleat. Other reviewers had noted the same defect and indicated they had to grind down the screw head. I wanted to avoid this solution since removing the anodized finish may eventually lead to corrosion. Instead I ordered a new shelf from Amazon. The new one came and it did not have the defect. Now I have two functional shelves. Knowing that the tight fit of cleat to its cleat mate were important, I was a bit anxious about getting the holes drilled precisely centered and as straight as possible. Not doing so would potentially lead to the screw head sitting cockeyed in its countersunk hole and make it impossible to mount the shelf on the cleat. To solve this, I used two drill bits instead of one. I began with a high quality 3/16" tungsten carbide masonry bit. This bit is a smidge bigger in diameter than the holes in the cleat. As such it afforded automatic centering in the hole and avoided drill tip travel on the smooth and uneven tile surface in my shower. Once through the 5/16" tile, I switched to the recommended 1/8" bit to get through the cement board substrate. Thus, the screw would easily go through the tile and then its threads would grab in the cement board for a secure anchor. Fortunately, I did not crack a tile and the shelves both mounted on their cleats with a little coaxing. They also pop off with a little coaxing so cleaning is easier. In the end, we are very happy with the end result. The shelves add functionality and beauty to the shower enclosure. However, the installation difficulty is high for the DIYer. I would not advise you attempt this yourself with only basic skills. Every rose has its thorn...

Beautiful but a pain to install
These shelves are solid metal, nice and heavy. I read the reviews prior to purchasing and installing so was on the lookout for the plastic nubs on the cleats issue resulting in a difficult installation. When I inboxed them, I could slide the small circular mounting brackets into the cleats on the back of the shelf, with the plastic nubs intact, pretty easily, so thought that design problem must have been fixed. During installation, I had a second person mark the mounting brackets while I held the shelf level. The adhesive held the brackets fine and the shelf slipped up off them easily. I thought, this is going great! The 1/8” recommended pilot hole seemed a bit small, so I also drilled a bit bigger relief hole. I used the screws that came with the product and they went in easily, but i was unable to get them perfect flush, the screw heads stuck out just a tiny, tiny bit. This made mounting the shelf back cleats really difficult. I could see that the screw head were causing the issue so filed them down enough so that the shelf would mount properly. It was still a tight fit, had to use a pad, wood block, and hammer to get the shelves fully mounted. I’m not sure that I want to try to take them off, ever. So was a little bummed about that, cleaned behind there won’t be as easy. In the end, the shelf looks beautiful and I’m really happy with the look.

It is a nice shelf, but the hole size for toothbrushes is huge.
I like the way the shelf looks, as well as my client. If you mount it well it is very solid. I just don't understand why the holes for a toothbrush are nearly an inch. I don't have a toothbrush that would not just fall through the holes in the shelf. If they had some kind of insert that made the hole a usable size, I would be all for it. Otherwise, they should just delete the holes.

Looks nice, but not worth the effort, $$, or frustration.
The purchase of this shelf has been a frustrating endevor. It is a special order part, so is made after it's ordered. It did come earlier than was predicted, but didn't come with the brackets needed to mount it. I contacted Kohler and was sent the mounting hardware. Well, most of it. This too was missing parts. There were two little bags which should have been the same, but one had four parts, the other just two. HELLO!! ANYBODY PAYING ATTENTION???? Apparently not. Fortunately the necessary parts were now all in my possession. So on to the mounting...but first I had to reassemble the shelf since the donkey who built it didn't do a very good job putting two screws in each of the two brackets, so they were loose (the screws were bottomed out in the junk that was on the bottom of the blind holes). To install this shelf on a tile surface it must be done EXACTLY or it will not slip onto the brackets. There is no wiggle room at all, so if the installer doesn't have serious skills, pass on this. I am now going to pass on Kohler products in general, and I DO have the skills.

Very sturdy and nice clean look
Recent bathroom renovation. This is just what we were looking for at a good price. It really goes with the stainless steel look in the rest of the bath. We put one in the shower, and one as a shelf beneath the vanity mirror!

Will not last
Bought and installed 4 years ago. Installation wasn’t easy but if you’re careful it wasn’t very difficult. I now find myself ordering a new shelf. For some reason one of the mounts got corroded and broke. I have 2 other shelves that are exactly the same and show no signs of failure. The mount closest to the shower head is also fine. For the cost I would think a shelf would last longer. The first picture is the wall mount that broke. The second is the mount on the shelf that broke and the last is the other side that looks completely fine.
