Doesn't fit; Why so many different options???
Why Kohler has ten (ten!) different stoppers and three different drain assemblies for a single faucet (Fairfax R12181-D) I will never know. I'm not talking about finishes either, it's ten different shapes/design/styles of stopper. With absolutely no indication on the drain assembly's throat opening (only the outer diameter of the drain flange), one is left to guess what stopper will fit. This one didn't for my drain. Shame on Kohler for ill-written specifications and too many drain designs. Ultimately, I made this one fit my drain by shaving off about 1/16" of material from the edge of each of the three fins. The base metal beneath the chrome is brass, so plus one for material selection. The polished chrome finish on the top with etched Kohler brand is well executed, and hopefully holds up well for many years.

Worked perfectly
I had a sink that would drain in seconds every time I filled it. This worked perfectly (after I watched a video on how to change only the stopper). Worth it! Don’t waste time, go ahead and buy it. Wish I would have sooner.

The wrong size for *most* installations.
Like several of the other reviewers, I bought this to match a broken stopper on a Kohler faucet set and it doesn't fit. Nor does it fit any of the other bath sinks in the house. My back-up plan was to use only the plastic bottom piece, but even that doesn't fit the older Kohler part. To help others, I'll list the dimensions. The top diameter is 1-9/16", very close to the original's 1-7/16". The fin radius is slightly over 5/8", a little *over* 1-1/4" diameter. The original was 9/16", 1-1/8", which fits smoothly into a 1-1/4" drain. The fin section is 2-1/2" long, extending 2-3/4" from the sealing o-ring. This shouldn't be a problem for most installations, but it's longer than the 2" insertion depth of the original. The white plastic bottom piece (made of nylon or Delrin, not metal) is approximately 3/16" with 20 threads per inch. The original is the same diameter, but 24 threads per inch. That's close enough that it looks similar unless you hold them side-by-side. The construction of the new part is unusual. There are three pieces (plus the sealing o-ring), rather than just two. The top disk is fully machined, beautifully polished and has the Kohler name subtlety etched. The middle fin section has such a rough surface texture that I wonder if there was a reason. Kohler parts aren't usually so crudely cast. The bottom plastic piece has a hole at the bottom end, with the threaded section extending an unexpected 2-1/2" to the top disk. To adjust you turn the plastic piece in the fin section to set the proper length, then tighten the top disk against the fin section to lock in place. A good procedure is to thread the fin section the whole way onto the plastic piece, thread the top disk on a few turns, set on *top* of the drain lever (using the bottom notch, not the hole), then screw down the top disk so that it is 7/16" higher than closing (the distance between the notch center and the hole center). Remove the assembly, spin the fin piece to lock against the top disk, and finally install with the lift lever through the hole.

Perfect Replacement for That Silly Little Part You Just Can't Live Without!
The old stopper broke at the very bottom of the threaded shaft after seven years of daily usage. I removed it to determine the part number and left it open for one day. Sure enough, my wife lost an heirloom earring down the drain! I looked up my sink model on the Kohler website at www.Kohler.com/ServiceParts. Search for Bathroom > Bathroom Faucets > Sink Faucets. This helped but there were NINE stoppers used in my model! So, I measured the size of my old part, then I compared it the new available parts on the the Kohler site. The part I received from Amazon was exactly as described and works perfectly. It is a Kohler brand part. Tips: Measure the diameter of your old stopper and match that to the replacement. Note your finish (such as chrome polished) and be sure to choose a match. Expect to adjust the length of both the threaded shaft at the bottom as well as the height of the stopper head at the top. Apply threadlocker to the lock ring that secures the stopper linkage to the drain. P.S. I retrieved the lost earring from the P-trap. Happy Wife!

If your looking to replace just the eyebolt....
Like many people, I purchased this part to replace the broken nylon threaded eyebolt in my old drain plunger. This part is chrome and is half the price of the brushed nickle part. The good news is that the top easily unscrews and comes apart to swap my original brushed nickle part to this one. UPDATE: I later found out that you don't have to purchase the complete stopper as the threaded eyebolt is available as a replacement part. Kohler does not make this part easy to find. Even my local Kohler Design Center had no clue how to order it or that it was even a replaceable part. It also isn't available at any of the hardware stores including Lowe's or Home Depot. So if you want to save a few more dollars and you don't need the entire stopper you can order the Kohler 1025648 - EYEBOLT, DRAIN PLUNGER for less than $1.50

Always check the size you need,
I needed 3 of these for replacing tarnished ones. Not all are the same size, however. After they didn't fit, I had to call kohler and send pictures. Much more expensive than these and apparently only coated chrome. We'll see when they come and hope they fit tho as the new ordered ones are the only ones that will fit a sink installed in 2006.

Perfect
My old one broke. It’s 15 years old. I bought this and it was perfect. Fit like a glove.

specified dimension is a bit off
This item is not 38 mm but 39.5 mm diameter (measured with a vernier caliper). It didn't fit my drain but the plastic piece was all I really needed. It seems well-made though.
