An Amazing Assortment of Electronic Circuits and Components
Snap Circuits kits are valuable for children (and adults) on so many levels. They fascinate as well as demonstrate many important principles of electricity and electronics. The unique method of assembling or constructing the various circuits teaches manipulative skills, as thinking and planning is required to get polarity and circuit path functionality, especially when designing circuits or adding to those featured in the manuals. The manuals themselves are beautifully and clearly illustrated. Circuits vary from the most basic to surprisingly complex. Basic electrical safety is repeatedly emphasized. One of the vary rare gifts which is truly adaptable and usable for all ages. The largest kit contains everything needed, with the exception of AA alkaline batteries. The 6 Volt maximum assures complete safety from the danger of electrical shock. All in all, very highly recommended educational kit for both boys and girls.

Very cool learning tool, parts very delicate
Our son who just turned 8 LOVES this set. I do wish the parts held up better. One of the coolest parts stopped working immediately. There may be spare parts available but I don't really want the hassle of ordering often.

After four years - still fun, affordable, easy to use and picked by schools for STEM classes
If you're wondering what to buy your child this year that is not another toy or video game, consider Snap Circuits. Elementary schools in my area have introduced them as part of their STEM curriculum and they have been a hit with the students as they are able to create all sorts of projects, including alarms, fans, lamps, AM radio, doorbells, special sound and light effects, etc. I will compare it to Little Bits and Lego Mindstorm below. There are materials and training out there to build more elaborate toys that could potentially get your child a Science Fair prize, but if you're looking for something affordable that doesn't require an advance degree, allows kids to have fun on their own and spend hours tinkering with, you'll soon find that the Snap Circuits 750 sets is the best investment. It is the one my child's school picked in the end for ease of use and because - let's face it - kids love it. A Top 10 Educational Toy award and a 5-star overall review speaks for itself. Don't let the nondescript look and fancy name fool you - this is a high quality, five-star rated toy, voted one of the best of the year. You can buy smaller Snap Circuit sets with the individual manuals, but the price overall will be higher when you buy all five separately. Get the whole set instead - the SC-750 set is a bargain for the hours of fun this will bring your child and your family for years to come. This set includes the 5 easy-to-follow manuals of the smaller sets and all the parts needed to build 750 projects in all, in a sturdy carrying case to hold it all. It's for kids 8-15 but grown-ups love to help as well This SC-750 set grows with your child. As a learning tool, the projects are meant to be done in some sequence, with each one explaining a part and what happens if you move this or that - at least in the beginning. We started working on the Jr (100) set which is the pink manual (1-101) when my son was five and he was able to do it with our help. Every step is explained, once you learn one project you move to the next and see what happens to a siren when you add a resistor, for example. The descriptions are kept short and to the point - for example, that the resistor lowers the volume. One reviewer wished each part of each project was explained in detail each time. As one project builds on the knowledge from a previous project, it's impossible to explain what happens with each part in any one project. This would fill the page with tons of text. Rather, it's a gradual learning process and it's assumed that earlier projects have been done. Four years later my son still loves it but is able to do it on his own, and is doing projects from other manuals. He can skip ahead too as the diagrams clearly show how to put all the parts together - though he might miss some explanations about the "why" of using each circuit part in a particular project if he doesn't do them in sequence. Not a big issue at this age where assembly-type toys with lots of parts are the norm. My now nine-year old considers the R-750 set to be - in his words - awesome. Seeing how each varies intrigues him to no end. He's still fascinated with the set, more so now that he's also using them in school. I've also had the opportunity to see other STEM toys in action. A month ago, Barnes and Noble hosted Mini Makers fairs in stores nationwide and one that was featured was Little Bits. It is probably more along the lines of more traditional circuits, where small components are put together to create alarm clocks and moving parts in legos. It is also exorbitantly expensive. Fortunately some libraries are investing thousands of dollars in buying these so you may soon be able to find them free of charge near you. It too ends up creating gizmos and gadgets, but for a lot of $$. Today I covered another STEM event at a library, this time with Lego Mindstorm. A teacher helped students for two hours to build a Lego robot, starting with the base Mindstorm unit, programming it on a computer, setting up parameters for instructions to make the robot spin, turn lights on and off, etc. This class was free but if you decide to buy it on amazon, a Lego Mindstorm Kit is very expensive and only lets you do a handful of projects. Now the big "BUT" kids have a hard time doing these on their own which is why schools are bringing teachers to train them and companies - not schools, at least in my area - are doing after-school classes and summer camps just to learn how to use this Lego Mindstorm. If the teacher leaves, the kids are left with a bunch of technology they don't know how to use because it can be so complex. In all, either as an introduction to circuits or simply as an assembly toy, it's a winner.

Money spent to activate the brain, rather than to deactivate the brain!!
I bought this for my 90 year old dad, who is a little bored and who is also not safe surfing in cyberspace. He desperately tries to get on the computer and read news, but it always leads him to clicking links to unsafe places. So I bought him this kit to play with, and he loves it. The pieces are sturdy and he can manage them with his gnarled hands. The picture schematics are easy to decode. There is nearly instant gratification with a light turning on, a fan spinning, or a sound, etc. when you build even the very first projects. This kit, while it seems expensive, is a couple months cable TV cost, and so much better for a brain. You can work on the projects with more than one person, make it a group fun thing. There are HUNDREDS of projects! All of the projects have a cool reward like the thing spinning, etc. They are right when they state "suitable for ages 8-108."

Quality product
This is an excellent product for enquiring minds. I have purchased both the junior set and the electronics discovery kit and have been impressed with the quality of both. The kits are strong and durable and my grandson has had endless fun building the various circuits. He has been able to use the knowledge he has learnt to help with school projects. Snap circuits make learning fun and are a great educational tool. I would definitely recommend and will be purchasing more products in the future.

Superb build quality, very well organized 'experiments'. Absolutely worth it.
I have been eyeing this for sometime for my kids and when I saw this listed at an amazing price, very close to the prices available in the US, I grabbed it. It also reached me very quickly. Thanks Amazon. The product is designed to get kids excited about electrical / electronics around them. You could pull together a breadboard and several of these components at a much lower price. You would be still stuck with messy / a little unsafe soldering etc. or with ugly wires sticking around. While for some, that could be well be the 'charm' of 'rolling up your sleeves', I don't believe that is a great first introduction. Because much of the bandwidth will be spent trying to 'make it work'. Now this on the other hand, has really high quality board and parts. The manuals (there are 5 of them with this set!!) are clear and easy to follow. There is enough basic information on not just 'what' but 'why' you do them. For those who want more detailed information, you could easily pull more content online from the web. The way I chose to use it, was to get the kids (11 and 5 years) to pull together anything that caught their fancy from the hundreds available. They started attempting the very complicated stuff, but quickly agreed they would rather go in sequential order :-) The 'experiments' are organized in sequential order of difficulty / complexity. When they pulled it together, they got great satisfaction from making the bulbs flash / sirens beep etc. I would then ask them 'why they think it happened'. So without getting into complicated IC circuitry which would be above them, they started understanding the need for logical gates and how circuits work or computers 'think'. I then asked my 5 year old what logical 'gates' (OR, AND, XOR) etc. he would use for him and his friends to reach the play park and use various equipment (swing : only one allowed at a time, see saw : perforce needs two etc.) This was great fun for him and terrific learning as well. My 11 year old is now trying to seriously decide whether the 'oscilloscope' principle is best served for engineers or doctors.. and therefore what she should become when she grows up :-) Absolutely love it!! I wish I had these things when I was growing up.

EDUCATIONALLY SUPERB
I have already made some comment, but I have now had a peek inside the box itself (before giving it to my grandchildren, rather bright and aged just four). My main interest was the MANUALS, not the components. The components would be FOR A PERSON ALREADY KNOWLEDGEABLE in electronics, be just a few quids' worth. The MANUALS seem to amount to a full course in basic electronics, and seem to be excellent as teaching or self-teaching (we used to call it "discovery learning") material, CHILD-CENTRED, educationally speaking, and properly-structured as a full teaching (ie understanding) course. An example: there are instructions of PRECISE physicist-satisfying worth, to explain how resistors can be made from pencil 'lead' (graphite) on a paper substrate, and then a circuit to test this. Meanwhile it teaches the invariance of the width-over-length ratio of a graphite film in determining its resistance. This is truly educational, teaches the child REAL UNDERSTANDING of the physics. Even if there is any small thing wrong anywhere (some have complained of missing components, some of poor after-sales service, and I noticed a tiny typographical error (!) ) the kit as a whole is SUPERB. It is its educational value, and especially the good manuals, that make this kit twenty stars out of five. Eric Franklin
