Meets my needs, but had missing parts
The Reel system is exactly what I needed; a reel to attach to the pole I already had. This is not a typical item, so finding what I needed was very helpful. It isn't a perfect match since the pole isn't from the same company but it works! Comes with straps for connecting to a pole (no need to order those separately). However, there were a few issues which make me pause in ordering other products from this manufacturer. 1. Parts were missing from the box. I searched and finally found an email address where I could send a message about the missing parts. Though I have to admit I was very skeptical that I would ever get a response and I was prepared to return the product, to my delight I got a quick response and was able to follow-up with a phone call to further describe what was missing and get assurance that the parts would be sent. Not only that, they included an additional part that I needed (not standard in the box) at no additional charge. So, while there were missing parts I give an A+ for customer service in fixing the problem and going beyond. The parts arrived 5 days later. 2. In addition to the missing parts, there were parts that are supposed to connect using an included plastic bolt, but there was no hole to put the bolt through as described in the instructions. Granted, it would have worked without connecting these parts (they were not critical to the function of the reel), but why were the parts not properly prepared? I used my own drill to make the necessary holes and its all good. I would make sure that I get exactly what I expect on any future products from this manufacturer. Perhaps they're more thorough on more standard products?

Simple solution to Pool Coverage
1st point - be careful in your order. This item is only the end pieces (the bearing assembly). You need to order seperately the aluminum tube that goes between these 2 wheel-looking items. The object description does state this, but I have seen many reviews where buyers were disappointed because they didn't get the whole kit. 2nd point - very easy to assemble. Putting the ends together took around 5 minutes. Putting the seperately purchased tube together took around 15 minutes and attaching the cover to the whole assembly took another 20 minutes. I needed a battery powered drill, screw driver and a seperate wrench for the whole thing. 3rd point - works very well with my 15' by 30' rectancular pool. The whole cover can be rolled up relatively neatly. The great thing is that I can actually re-cover my pool with no help and no running around to each side to advance the cover. I just slowly pull out the cover from the reel and make sure it lays flat on the water at the beginning. If I advance it slowly, it just rolls out flat and smooth onto the surface of the water, without the cover bunching up. 4th point - the plastic seems sturdy, but the aluminum for the reel pole is pretty easy to damage. I did have one of my mounting screws for the cover pull out of the aluminum. I had to replace the origianal screw with a slightly larger one to hold more firmly in the relatively soft aluminum.

Pole doesn’t come with it and is too light!!!
Does not come with the pole so the low price is deceptive. It only works with their pole and together the price ended up costing more than the other brands. This turns well but the base is too light. So the entire assembly shifts as the cover is being opened or closed. I didn’t have this problem with my older one. A more weighted base is needed.

Hydro Tools 5100 Solar Reel
Order Received 7/13/2012 Following problems: 1. Received 3 each Plastic Tube Inserts(PTI). I have round tubes with 1/2' wide dimples at 120 degrees. Two of the PTIs do not fit my tubes. The lone PTI dose. The lone PTI has 3/8" thick long posts and 1/4" thick short posts. Whereas the other two PTIs are 5/16" thick long posts and 3/16" thick short posts. 2. The stainless screws for the tube assembly and straps only came with 11 screws whereas I need 15 screws for the 10 straps and 4 for the tube assembly. These screws are necessary for reinstallation of the tube to fit Hydro Tools system. Please send one PTI of the Thicker design and 4 stainless steel screws for the tube assembly.

The wheel doesn't turn, LOL
I think they mane the wheel look to match the cover when rolled up. The center axles turn. All in all it seems a good product.Took a couple days longer than the other parts to get here, 4 days. I would make mine assembly pull the cover underneath because the geometry is stronger. So I disagreed with the instructions. I found the last paragraphs in the instructions confusing. I certainly think they should have said you will need the self tap screws used to secure the bar together during assembly (the bar is not included BTW because you can get different bar length). They provide extra hardware, It looks well make. It worked without securing it to the concrete. There are straps between the bar and the cover, so you get full use of the cover length. It also can be used on non-rectangular pools. The reel attaches in the center for such applications. All in all very pleased.

Don't forget the pole
I use it indoors so construction material isn't too important and the plastic works fine. This is just the rollers, and does not include the pole. Perfectly understandable since we all need different size poles. I had a $7000 automatic cover and replaced it with this for a few hundred, and they're just about the same as far as ease of use. Using it on a 16 x 40 pool with a solar cover and it has no problem rolling it up. I'd say anything under 60 ft will fit on here.

Easy to replace
The old pool reel was sun rotted. This one hooked right up, in the existing holes.
