Favorite board game ever

Within the span of 2 weeks, spirit island quickly became my favorite board game of all time. This expansion adds so many new fun mechanics that enhance the experience significantly. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Spirit Island becomes a Living Island

While not required, Branch and Claw and Feather and Flame were both added to my copy of Spirit Island prior to this expansion. I will say that there is some added complexity when it comes to this expansion, but this is the reason I love SI. The fact that you can play with up to 24 VERY different spirits brings a level of replayability that is seldom seen in board games. Adding the ability to have up to six spirits playing at the same time also makes for some potentially interesting game nights. Overall, this expansion is well-executed, with more flavor. I've only played ~20 times, but this is certainly the game I'm reaching for if time allows.

Overcomplicated expansion to a good game.

On average I’d say this has too much to it. The fact that in order to use independent added elements requires other elements to be learned makes it feel all or nothing. The expansion is fine, but overall it was overpriced in my mind. Base game is excellent but I’d leave jagged earth to the super fans.

Phenomenal expansion, but slight miss on quality control

Received this expansion after having pre-ordered it a few months ago. It has definitely lived it to very high expectations. The new spirits actually feel NEW and interesting, and of course they are all wonderfully thematic. However, the print on the tokens was not centered, and the map and spirit boards are a bit bent/warped. I've requested replacement tokens. I will happily update this review to 5 starts despite the warped boards if the publisher sends good replacements. This is an absolute must-have if you liked the base game. ~UPDATE~ New tokens have arrived. Updating to 5 stars. Thanks, GTG!

A fantastically designed expansion that greatly enriches the experience. The balanced is maintained even with 10 more beautifully complex/themed spirits and tons of new power cards. Solo play is incredible and multi-player is good up to about 4. You can play with 6, but it is a lot especially if its 6 new people. The game is difficult and long, but great certain kinds of gamers. 10 out of 10 from me!

Great addition to a great game!

More spirits and powers and everything else you love about the game. Adds up to 2 more players with more island boards. I love the addition of differing board layouts too. I felt like there should have been a few more minor power cards with how many spirits were added.

Skip unless you are looking for more complex Spirits

I was excited for so many new spirits and new mechanics. The Spirits are mostly complex to use, so not many out of my group wanted to play them as we would rather enjoy play than micro manage what we are doing. But if you you found the base Spirits too easy, you will enjoy these guys. The mechanics are mostly the same, the new "Bad lands" seemed like a throw in, and the isolated lands are meh. The overall issue with this and branch and claw, are there are just to many card powers now in the deck to use all the mechanics. And that is an issue when a Spirit must have those mechanics in play to be fun/useful. Overall, i wish i passed on this expansion.

Large amount of content

I wasn't sure about the price tag of this expansion but having now played with it, it is well worth it with how much content it contains. 10 new spirits, a new token that makes previously "meh" cards now worth it, a new mechanic in the Major Powers, etc.

If you love ❤️ Spirit Island, get it.

I was hesitant to buy any of the Spirit Island expansions, waited years actually. The big debate was: the extra tokens and events cards. Some people reported the tokens (wilds, beasts, strife, etc) made it too complicated. And that events cards (which randomly mess up your plans) were too unpredictable. Well I’ve played with them now, and I find the game dull without them. The tokens are easy after a few plays. The board seems cluttered to start but I didn’t notice it after a game or two. I love the added events as they bring just enough tension to make it interesting for veteran players. (It just gets better.) Last but not least, I though the spirits would be repetitive. Not so. Somehow the creators were able to make each spirit have its own style and thematic gameplay yet again. It’s so good. There is a lot of content in this (if you want to dip your toe in get Branch and Claw first, but not needed). And I’ll have years of gameplay from it. Add in the neat twists of new power cards, blighted cards, fear cards... I could go on and on. Only warning: game time. We used to run about an hour and a half. Times have been double that due to players reading the new cards, new spirits, and the increased difficulty. For me though, this is a must have expansion. Well done GreaterThanGames.

Expansion is great. But product was shipped in a paper bag...

The game itself is amazing. Expansion is worth it. But I would not order more board games here on amazon. It came shipped in an amazon paperbag... Please amazon, when shipping your products, use proper boxes. Many gamers care about their games being whole enough to put on the shelf for display. I live in London but can't imagine what someone living further out would receive when they get it in a paper bag...
