A Tad on the Too Challenging Side
*Please note this review is the 2 player experience only* The game has some pretty nice components. I liked the extra touches such as the McFly family photo and the instructions looking like the comic book that George McFly is reading in the movie. I really like the comic art style that they incorporated. There are no screen grabs or pictures from the movie, but the style is true enough to the actors depiction that you will have no doubt recognizing any of them. I did like the cardboard clock tower, but we stopped using it as a dice tower because it didn't do a very good job rolling them when we would drop them through and they would often get stuck. The instructions are pretty well written so if you follow along as you read them, you shouldn't have much trouble getting going. There is a web address in the instructions to a video that explains how to play if you're not clear after reading them. The problem begins when you play the game. All players work towards the same goals: get George and Lorraine to fall in love, collect parts around town for the Delorean, and move it into position all before lighting strikes the clock tower. While doing this you are completing opportunities to gain extra power tiles and helpful items and trying to keep Marty's parents away from Biff. There are different turn amounts depending on the number of players and no matter what it always seems like there is not enough turns to accomplish everything that needs to be done before the game ends. On every playthrough we get pretty close, but we run out of time without accomplishing all of the goals or the picture of Marty and his siblings completely disappears. The biggest problem outside of the limited turns seems to be the "Trouble Cards" you are required to lay every so often. Some of them are way too powerful (the ones that allows Biff to move the Delorean backwards or keep George and Lorraine locked in their houses are particularly annoying) and some of them are really hard to throw the right dice to remove their effects. There's so much else that you must do just to try and win that having to stop to potentially waste three dice on attempting to remove the effects of a trouble card is really frustrating. I would say about 7 times out of 10 the attempts fail. Biff also is allowed to move way too much. Not only does he almost always move when you are required to move Marty's parents, but whenever you roll a die, you run the risk of rolling his face and moving him again. (And if you get that trouble card that allows one biff face to count as two, well, you've probably just lost the game.) I'm sure some of these annoyances could be alleviated by removing some of the cards from the deck before playing, but then what's the point? And truth be told, the last time we played we cheated quit a bit (the dice hit the board, I get to reroll LOL) and we STILL LOST. I am wondering if the game is easier with three or four players. Maybe with more people working together the goals become a bit more manageable. I can not speak to this though because I've never played with more than two players. I would only recommend this to a die hard fan of the movie and even then I would caution them against paying full price for it. I love the Back to the Future movies and the concept of the game is great. The execution leaves something to be desired unfortunately.

Beat it on the first play through
After reading the reviews, I expected us to have a hard time. We played 2 players and beat it on the first try. Maxed out the power tiles and and got only two items, the locket and the guitar. Perhaps we had a lucky playthrough, not sure. But either way it was really fun and plays pretty much like the movie haha. We will be replaying it and hope to get different items.

Back to The Future - Back in Time: If it was too easy it wouldn't be fun
What a great game. Easily 5 stars. Our 9 year old loves it and can't wait until we play the next game. The theme and production quality are top notch, except in our case 3 of the plastic characters pieces (Jennifer, George, and Lorraine) are leaning to one side noticeably - but does not affect play of the game. There is a strategy aspect to the game where each character's ability, moves and rolls MUST be optimized. This requires discussion and planning with your teammates. If the the character's strengths at the start of the game aren't leveraged (for example, at the start Marty can roll two blue dice and has the ability to move Lorraine towards him), it is very hard to win. It is also critical to join forces with other characters sharing the same square to improve the chances of successfully winning a challenge. You have to cooperate and plan with each other. Yes sometimes the dice go against you but the fun is trying to overcome it rather than looking to fix something that isn't broken. Before blaming the dice, I suggest approaching each loss as an opportunity to learn from mistakes and consider what to try differently next time. This game is challenging as cooperative games should be. I've read other reviews complain that Biff comes up too often or house rules are needed. I completely disagree. Luck is a factor in this game with the dice roll, however I don't see the fun in a game that is easy to win. We've played about 10 times and have won twice. Both times the victory came on the last player's turn before 10:04 pm. Both times we cheered and high-fived each other. It was thrilling and we excitedly talked about what happened during the game that got us to victory. This is the experience I want from a great co-op board game. We've also had the game end early because of rolling Biffs and the picture fading away. Yes, we complain bitterly how Biff wouldn't give us a break and then we eagerly set up for the next game to try again. I suppose if you can't stand to lose then this game may not be fun for you. This game is no different than other co-op games like Pandemic, Forbidden Desert, etc - you're going to lose more than win, even more so if you don't play together as a team.

A lot going on....
Hard(ish) game based on all the instructions. First attempt was a challenge. Will get easier but definitely need to pay attention to many things.

AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!
This is such a great game. Every part of it is so well thought out. Very faithful to the film. Just finished playing it for the first time, and have reset the board to play it again right away. If you like the film, you will love this game!!!

Great Game
Excellent gameplay with a lot of nostalgia for the movie itself. All of the events of the game make sense with the movies and makes the perfect combination of strategy and fitting with the movie.
