Works as intended at a relatively cheap price
These filters do their job and last a while before needing replacement. Only thing to watch out for is making sure you run them under water for a while before using them. The filters will work for the 1/2, 1, and 2 gallon water fountains made by PetSafe. Company also says it's compatible with their other fountains. When buying a pack of 12, they come in a small cardboard box but are individually plastic wrapped. The filters work as intended. A lot of grime that builds up over time from my two cats drinking water out of the fountain will collect on the filter. However, don't overestimate these either. They only work as well as the fountain can use them. I have the 1 gallon water fountain. I will still find small particulates at the bottom of the water. But I believe that is just the fountain not being able to cycle water with enough strength. Do they last 4 weeks like PetSafe claims? Maybe. If you remember to change out the water and clean the fountain each week, you might make a filter last 4 weeks. However, I do not do a full clean of the fountain each week. I usually do that at the 2-3 week mark. My filters average around 3 weeks this way, which is good enough for me. These are charcoal filters so it's normal to see black particulates when you first open them from the packaging. Rinsing is extremely important to prevent them from ending up in the water fountain. I run the filter under water for around 1 minute on both sides to make sure the loose charcoal gets washed out. If you do that, you shouldn't end up with any charcoal buildup in the fountain. Does the initial type of water used affect results? I believe it does. I've tested with regular tap from the faucet, filtered water from the fridge, and bottled water. When using regular tap water, I notice a lot more buildup on the insides of the fountain versus filtered/bottled water. I also feel that the filters last longer if you use cleaner water initially. Overall, for the price, these filters do their job. The minor complaints I have apply more to the fountain design than the actual filters themselves.

easy to install
These filters are very easy to install, each time I clean the fountain I replace the filter.

Great price!
I’ve been ordering the 4 pack for the longest time, scared to get this value pack (figuring there would be a difference and not be great quality) but I’m glad I made the switch. Saving a lot of money now!

Affordable 6 month supply!
THIS... Is PetSafe's replacement carbon filter, and to keep things short and sweet here is a great low-cost carbon filter replacement that will last you about 6 months. They are not reusable or washable so you must throw them out after a couple of weeks or so of doggage. They swap out easily and keep my pump running as clean as the water! Make sure you rinse these out before use as they have dust from manufacturing that needs to be cleaned out. Cheap replacement for a 12 knowing my dog's fountain is clean, reliable, and always healthy!

these leave charcoal residue for days
I used to use the 12 pack but they made everything black - I would soak them multiple times before I used them but for days after cleaning and replacing the filter I had a charcoal residue in the bowl of the fountain despite my soaking them before hand.Initially when I got the fountain I didn't remember having this issue from the the 4 pack by Petsafe.I bought the 4 pack again just to see if there is a difference and it is better still need to soak the charcoal multiple times but I dont see as much residue - maybe they are using inferior filters in the. 12 pack

Black slime comes out of filters.
I found black slime like wet mold all through my fountain spout and around the edges of the fountain and in the motor. Also black slime and grit coming from the filter, which was only a few days old. I threw it out and put a new one in thinking it was a dud. Then in a couple of days, I saw foam around the edge of the water and so thinking I didn't get all the soap out of it the day before, I noticed slime in it again and coming out of the filter. I threw the whole box of these out. I don't want to take the chance my cat could get sick from this, though I think he knew the water was off as he was going back to batting the sink faucet to drink from it like he used to before the fountain. I did as instructions said and soaked and rinsed the filters before putting them in and still, like other reviewers said, the stuff was still coming out. Now I am running the fountain without the filter and changing the water out daily as a normal dish. I just hope my cat isn't completely turned off using the fountain, until my local pet store can restock the filters I used to get. So much for saving a few bucks and buying these bulk ones. I don't know if these are really from the company as the box they came in was just a plain cardboard box with no branding. Very different from the ones I got from my petstore.

New design is useless!
As a previous reviewer pointed out (photos too), and PetSafe has confirmed, the design has changed. They have added spacers, or ridges to the flat side, creating a large empty space within the filter chamber. PetSafe says this change will make all the water within your fountain completely filter 'eventually' (see the questions section), and that's not good enough for me. After just 3 days with their new filter, the inside of my fountain was slimey, also visibly foggy from my cat's litter. (she is a paw dunker) Neither occurred so quickly with the filter that came with my fountain. I also noticed that the fabric batting on both the top and bottom became very weak and sunken in after only 7 days use. To the point where I could easily poke my finger straight through without much effort. I returned the unused 11 filters to Amazon, and purchased the GOLDTONE filters found on here. They are the original design that completely fill the whole filter chamber. I will be keeping them as they are FAR superior to these.

THESE DON'T FILTER!! SEE WHY HERE!
The way these filters are made..........they won't filter the water. We use a Pagoda fountain and finally started using these filters (ordered in May so can't return) because they were such a bargain but you need to realize that they are not filtering. ** In the first photo is a picture of these "filters" and on the right, notice the dark little space on the right side of the filter? That is the outlet of the filter and you are seeing right past the filter to the table on the other side. The last photo shows the opposite side and you can see the filter doesn't fit right allowing water to FLOW AROUND THE FILTER. ** In photo #2 & 3, you can see the 2 "ridges" these "filters" have, to just fit in the housing. The proper filters don't have, or need these spacers. ** To make these work, I made a gasket on the side with the ridges. I used a piece of Saran Wrap. ** The final P.I.T.A. of these "filters" is the original ones came 2 in a package while these use the same amount of plastic for a single filter despite space being available. Nothing will happen to a filter in an open plastic bag for 30 days, good grief. Buy another product

Updated review after using for a while
So this is my 2nd review after using this product for a while. These are no where near as good as previous purchase. This is my 2nd or 3rd box of these filters. Very cost effective. But this box has much thinner filter material over the charcoal. When running an initial rinse, it appears that ALL the charcoal runs straight out of the filter. There are 2 ridges which mean that the water does not all run through the filter. The water becomes slimy VERY quickly. The cat now throws his toys in the bowl to show his displeasure. Not happy at all with this version of replacement filters. I was sent another box of these awful filters through subscription (I thought it was a different product that is MUCH better.) Box has arrived with products covered in carbon- much worse shape than 2nd shipment. Now I see I am unable to return this product. Not only does it not fit, is filthy, but now you cannot return. DO NOT PURCHASE!

Water Fountain Washing Facts
One thing I've noticed is the filter's granules at the bottom of the fountain Is this bad for the cats ? I wash the fountain once a week, I take everything apart and wash it in hot soapy water to remove the Alge that may stick to the components, I Scrub the plastic surface of the filter and the housing to the filter in and out, to remove the Alge grime, I change the filter and sponge once a month, I buy it from Amazon, 12 pieces each, this way it lasts a year. it's much cheaper in the long run. I wash the sponge that surrounds the pump also in soapy water, I take the pump apart every 2 to 3 weeks, there are 3 parts and wash it very well. I wash the 2 components, the bowl and the fountain, sometimes using a special brush to enter the tight spaces. Once washed and dried I set it back up and use cold water, and I fill it to about half a inch from the top, then I start the pump, by plugging it to the wall.
