Nesco FD-1000 Gardenmaster Food Dehydrator
I got this dehydrator three days ago and it's been used everyday since. I've never made any type of jerky before and the stock Nesco flavor is just okay using lean ground beef but making jerky from muscle meat and making your own sauce mix from recipes online this thing really shines. The first day we over did the spices and man that stuff was killer hot and the second day we backed off with some of the HOT spices which was good but not as good as the hot stuff is. Today we did some pineapple chunks which was far better than the dried sugary retail products. On the control panel there are only four buttons start/stop, increment UP, increment DOWN, time/temp and the L.E.D. display. Once it's plugged in there is continuous power to the unit until it's unplugged meaning the LED's remain lit. first press of the time temp button lets you set the temp, the second press of time/temp lets you set the cycle time in 30 minute increments using the UP/DOWN buttons. Once you set your temp and duration you then just press start and wait for it to time out and turn off the heating mechanism. It is a well made product that won't require watching (but I wouldn't leave home with it running) and to be fair, I wouldn't leave home with a crock pot running either. If you get one of these you'll also be shortly looking for a food sealing outfit if you don't already own one. Together these will save you some serious money if you have a larger household. I really should have looked into this a long time ago. EDIT: Quick Start/Tips/Lessons Learned! Having used this dehydrator a few weeks now and mixed a few different flavor mixes I thought I'd update this review to remove some of the mystery in making good jerky and help newbies starting out. Making jerky can be done 2 ways. By using lo-fat ground beef, or muscle cut meats i.e. top round, bottom round, or London broil cuts. If you are using ground beef along with the Nesco seasoning kits you'll be in good shape. However when you adventure to make muscle cut jerky with a 'Sweet & Spicy' recipe from allrecipe dot com. After mixing all the wet & dry ingredients it didn't occur to me that I was missing a crucial ingredient to the mix! It was 'The Cure' that comes in the Nesco kits! So if your mixing your own flavoring be sure to purchase some brand of meat curing salt that has 4 to 6% of Sodium Nitrite (if you plan to vacuum seal and freeze your jerky.) This isn't normally a problem since the jerky you make will will be quickly consumed by family and friends. If your going to freeze it use the salt and also get the oxygen absorber packets to throw in your vacuum seal pouches or it will spoil rapidly. Another observation I found was that the ground beef jerky was much more softer than the muscle cut jerky even extruded at twice the thickness of top round slices. Another observation was that the times quoted made the jerky more tuff and to compensate to get a more softer and juicy kind of jerky I lowered the time from 7 to 4 hours. It makes the flavor more pronounced. If you have additional/extra trays in your dehydrator then just increase the time. Now that there is abundant low cost jerky around I put some in the food processor and reduced it to shred and put that into both baked and pinto beans while they cook. It works pretty well in those side dishes. If you like it hot, forget adding extra measures of peppers, and tweak the Ginger. If you like it sweeter, tweak the pineapple juice.

Easy to clean and drys evenly.
I use it for beef jerky and drying fruits and vegetables. This is my forth one of this brand since about 1985. I started out with a light bulb suspended above a tray inside a plastic container back in 1981. This style of dehydrator , with the air going up the sides and across the top and bottom of the food does really nice. I like that all the mechanical parts are on the top. When drying marinated meat, the drippings drop down to the bottom tray and there is plenty of room for the excess. I had their pro model with the motor and fan on the bottom for many years but the drippings fell into the fan and motor area. I had to disassemble it on occasion to clean it out. NESCO FD-1040 Gardenmaster Digital Pro has an on switch, timer and heat setting. It would suite me better if it had a fan speed also. The other pro one had a fan speed but no timer. The timer is most important because you can have it finish after bed time. In the past I would have to set an alarm clock so my food wouldn’t over dry.

Love this!
The media could not be loaded. I absolutely love this!! I love that it has a timer and shuts off when the timer is done. I bought 2 extra circle racks for it so I can dehydrate more at a time but they are really big. The ones I bought were just white so they don’t match the speckled ones but I don’t care. The speckled ones were more $. You can fit a ton of stuff on them. I dehydrated herbs and they came out perfect!

Why Doesn't A 1,000 Watt Dehydrator Outperform A 700 Watt Dehydrator?
I originally bought a Nesco Square Tray Dehydrator so that I could make sweet potato treats for our dogs without having to pay $15.00 per pound at the vet. When I figured the cost of the dehydrator along with buying sweet potatoes at from 66-99 cents per pound, I'd save about $500.00 per year making my own. The Nesco Square Dehydrator cost about $70.00, was highly rated by reviewers, had 700 watts of power, generated internal temperatures of from 95-155 degrees, and was rated to use up to 20 trays. My initial few attempts using the four trays provided produced great results, so I bought four more trays (for a total of eight). Unfortunately the addition of four trays significantly lengthened the time it took to get all of the treats uniformly dried. My choice then became to spend three times as much to try an Excalibur Dehydrator or to buy another Nesco unit with 1,000 watts of power for about $102.00. Since I would end up with two Nesco units for 2/3 the price of the Excalibur--and have 1,000 watts of power in the new unit--I went for the Nesco Gardenmaster. This unit generated internal temperatures of 90-160 degrees and was also rated for up to 20 trays. Learning my lesson before, I elected to simply add two trays to my purchase and then could compare the results of the two units as far as dehydrating time and output. So I cut up 22 pounds of sweet potatoes and placed them evenly on six trays in each of the two dehydrators, fired up the units, and then went to bed. Twelve hours later I checked the results, fully expecting the 1,000 watt Gardenmaster to have finished its task earlier than the 700 watt Square Dehydrator. But it didn't. Neither one had finished the sweet potatoes to the desired crispiness. So I added another three hours and checked the results again. Still no difference. Now I reversed the trays in each machine to put the top trays on the bottom and the bottom trays on top and added another three hours. Finally after a total of eighteen hours the treats were done--in both machines. There are any number of things that could cause this result: the shape of the machines, the actual wattage put out by each, the efficiency of the airflow in the square unit versus the round one, the thickness of the walls of the trays, etc. All I know is that I'm still satisfied with each of these Nesco units, but I was expecting a better result from the unit with higher power and costing $30.00 more. I think that from now on I will only use four trays in each dehydrator. Believing that each unit will effectively handle 20 trays of sweet potatoes in less than three days has to be a pipe dream.

Drying like mad
My wife had been saying she wanted a dehydrator. She said it a lot. I finally got her one for her birthday (hey, she asked, so no judgement because I got her an appliance). She LOVES it. She is drying stuff all the time. It works well. The pictures don't really do it justice. It is quite large and takes up a lot of counter space. She's drying vegetables and fruit and is using it pretty much every day. No issues with the unit itself. Because the diameter of the trays is so large, it is hard to clean as our kitchen sink is not that big. If you have a large sink or you can put these in a dishwasher, cleaning should be easy. Hand washing in a small sink, not so much. One complaint about the included accessories, however, is that the fruit leather tray is warped and won't lie flat. This means you can't fill it properly. If you put in a normal amount of puree, the unbalanced nature of the tray will cause it to overflow and make a mess. It was warped when it arrived and has not leveled out with use. Overall, this is an excellent product. I was hesitant to spend so much on our first dehydrator, but I think it was a good value for the money. It can hold a lot, it is expandable, it can reach a good high temperature (160 F) so you can dry meat, and it has a timer so you can set it to dehydrate while you sleep or are out. It does make as much noise as a table fan set on low, so you probably want to keep it away from where people sleep.

can be a little noisy
We wore out the first one, researched again, and settled on the same model a second time. The trays can be a little hard to clean in a standard kitchen sink, especially if they need to be soaked. Works well for drying fruit, making jerky, and drying flowers. The only fail was bananas.

Simple and Straight Forward - Really Works Well
This dehydrator is "light years" beyond my previous one (I had an older dehydrator without any timer or temperature control). Definitely recommend it. The 4 trays it comes with give plenty of room for the home enthusiast to dry fruit, jerky .... Customer service at Nesco was also very good and responsive when I asked them questions prior to purchasing.

Dry!
Good quality product, it is a bit noisy so if you have a small apartment you will hear it. The times setting is great and the product works awesome.

Works great, save money.
We do not use it for meat or anything that has sauce on it so it's easy to clean for us. Use to have one when I was younger and my mother used it all the time for jerky. Our use for fruits and vegetables is great. Mainly got it to make treats for the dogs. Save lots of money! Costed us $3 or so for Sweet Potatoes, and got 2-3X the amount as we would've got from the pet store made by a commercial supplier that cost $20/bag.
