Excellent value, does its job well.
I like this tip-up. At it’s price point of $20 you can’t really go wrong. The bad: Its a very simple construction with very lightweight materials. I have to keep a small mound of ice shavings around my hole to set this in to so that it doesn’t slide all over the place. This doesn’t bother me. It’s obviously not insulated so I wont complain about my holes freezing, but yes this happens quick with this tip-up. Ice also adheres to the shaft. Fortunately I expected these inconveniences and they are an easy work-around. I always bring a wood pole ice fishing and I just knock the ice before pulling on a fish. Also the down shaft is pretty short. Fortunately my ice hasn’t gotten much thicker than 10” this year in Nee Hampshire but if it were any thicker I would run into the problem of having my line run on the bottom edge of the hole. The good: PRICE, obviously. Also the flag pole is the perfect length to tuck under the far end when not in use. I also really enjoy the small knob that is on the spool it makes taking up your line 1000x easier than on my pro-thermal which I have also reviewed. In conclusion I think a tip up is basically a bobber. Just an indicator. It’s ok to go cheap. If you spool up good line, and tie a good knot, I see no reason to need an expensive “Made in Maine” all wood tip-up. Unless of course you are fishing on say…over 8” of ice. Then I could see the more expensive, heavy duty tip-ups with a longer down shaft being hugely important. In conclusion I would buy this tip-up again and again for the $20 for the panfish and occasional bass I catch. Anything larger, or on thicker ice, I would size up. Also of note, I’ve never had a flag not pop. The flag system is reliable, and I enjoy the two settings. Give me confidence when I see a flag, there is a fish, and when I don’t see a flag, there is no fish.

excellent for the price
I still prefer this folding cross stick design for tip-ups. I find them most visible from a distance with snow on the ice, and they are stable because of the wide leg spread. With a little practice you can adjust the sensitivity simply by the placement of the flag on the trip wire from the spool. They fold up to be a long narrow item which carries in almost any duffle, bag, or container, and they're light. This brand has a nice quality wood and the hardware functions smoothly. What more could you want from a tip-up? I've got some from the 1980's still working fine. If you treat them right and some dingbat on a snowmobile doesn't hit them, they could easily last a lifetime.

Good, but not as good as Frabill Artic Fire Tip Up
I already own 6 Frabill Artic Fire tip ups. I didn't look closely and ordered this Frabill Blackhawk model... I must say, it's really disappointing when you compare it to the Frabill Artic Fire... Cheaply constructed. The spool is made of plastic. Folding it for storage is clumsy compared to the Frabill Artic Fire. The flag retaining mechanism while in use is definitely not as good as the other Frabill tip up... In conclusion, this Blackhawk falls short of expectations... This is the only one I'm ever gonna buy. I'll keep buying the other model in orange or yellow. These are awesome!

For the money I was a little disappointed. It feels a little flimsy
I used this tip up this year as a back up. For the money I was a little disappointed. It feels a little flimsy. I want a flag that is going to spring up like a guy the morning of opening day. spins a little too freely for my liking as well. I have to ask: Why is it simply impossible for companies who make tip ups like this to cut the holes on them so the reel fits back into the hole comfortably. Come on, that drives me crazy and makes picking up and storing a pain. Anyways, the tip up does work.... just not my favorite for the money.

Came in broken.
If it wouldn’t have came in broken I would have put in a higher star. I do not think it is a manufactured defect, just a issue with the packaging. All in all the quality seems well. I ordered it and it should up the day before I was going out fishing, so I was unable to test it due to being broken. I submitted a return and a replacement, but not in stock.

Good basic tip up.
A little sensitive in windy conditions, and be mindful of wich way you wind your line when loading spool, the catch is one-directional. Good for the money. You can get 3 of these to 1 Heritage brand.

Great
Amazing tip up works as expected

For small amounts of line or shallow depths it is great. Otherwise
Works well but is very sensitive. For small amounts of line or shallow depths it is great. Otherwise, the small reel makes winding all the line in time consuming.

Don’t bother with beaver dam....
Same tip up as a beaver dam but cheaper and easier to spool line back in
