12 volt plug gets very hot
When first got it, I plugged the cooler in to be sure it worked. The plug got very hot. Ordered heavy duty 12 v plug. When looking at the plugs I discovered the only difference was the spring behind the fuse in the plug. Replacement plug spring was much heavier. Replaced the spring and overheating stopped. Cooler pulled down to 38f in room at 70f. Now work fine.

Yes, this is a great cooler but.....important....
We bought one of these a loooooonnnnnnggg time ago. Older than my college age children. Boy, did we use it a lot. On that one the cord could disconnect and it switched from heating to cooling depending on how it was plugged in. Then there was a separate cord for plugging it into a regular wall electrical outlet (the first half plugs into a car cigarette lighter). When using it we would bring it in the house, plug it in to cool it down, load it, and transfer it to the car/truck and plug into cigarette lighter. Worked like a gem. I also used it when grocery shopping as I travel pretty far for that sometimes. The electrical cord finally failed and the fan was beginning to make some sounds that it was one its last legs. This was after 20 some years! I bought this one to replace it and was surprised it didn't have the same cord setup. It came with the non-detachable cigarette lighter plug in for cool only. That's ok as we never used the warm feature. I did buy the electrical cord attachment to plug into a regular outlet. However, as others noted on here, about 2 months after purchasing and using it for a longer road trip and then just a few small trips to our cabin, the plug overheated and it simply stopped working. After searching posts here, my husband took apart the plug (cigarette lighter portion) and found a blown fuse and a spring that was not springy. He said he could fix it, but I contacted coleman right away. And....Coleman requested some purchase info and model info and quickly sent me a brand new unit. This new unit has the plug/cord like our original. It detaches from the cooler. The unit works fine and hopefully will continue to do so. Great customer service! So, this cooler is awesome but perhaps this model is old and coleman has already redesigned it. Perhaps look for a different seller and the cord/plug in I described.

perfect for traveling
My wife and I were going on a trip to visit family. As a diabetic I have to keep my medicine cool and this product was perfect for the job. While we were driving the cooler ran on 12 volt, and with a converter it ran on 120 volt current. It did a great job. I would gladly purchase it again.

Good but not great
Took it on a very long road trip during a heat wave and it did pretty good. I read the explanation on how you have to get it cold before you go, not while you’re in the car traveling, and that helped. Warning, It’s very noisy! Wasn’t so bad in the SUV with road noise but in the motel I had to put it in the bathroom and close the door to limit hearing the noise, which was still audible. Also, I had to order a charger to use indoors which was about $50. That sucked. The car charger is fine in the car but to keep it cold while traveling out of your car you have to be able to plug into an outlet. I do like it, but it could use a few tweaks for the price.

Holds frozen fish frozen
When driving back for 16 hours from northern Peru to Lima we filled the cooler with frozen Tuna Frozen shrimps and frozen scallops and it all arrived perfect no thawing no dripping perfect and we usually go to the beach filled with food and it maintains everything perfectly cold and the we convert it to a bar fridge for sodas and drinks I only have ordered a new converter cable for the wall during my 5 years of use Dont think just buy it it’s indispensable for traveling and having food or drinks refrigerated

Bad adapter
Bought this in Oct to use for summer. Checked it back them, worked, then kept unplugged. Finally broke it out for this weekend (May) and...adapter spring is broken. It connected for a minute, then light when out. Will contact Coleman for new piece, but if not, I'll just splice in a new adapter. But for under $100 (was on sale at time) its fixable.

Cheap and super effective if you're willing to put a little work into it
Engineer here - These thermoelectric coolers work perfectly, AS LONG AS YOU KNOW A FEW IMPORTANT THINGS. Save yourself alot of money (and weight) and buy these over a compressor based unit if you're willing to follow some best practices. First - Prechill your cooler, and any food or drinks you may place in here for a few hours. Thermoelectrics are not great at removing heat quickly compared to compressor units, if you place a bunch of warm objects in here, you won't get the cooling you think you should. In order to pre-chill the unit, purchase the optional AC wall adaptor before you use it in your car. Second - This unit cools about 35-40 degrees F below AMBIENT temperature. If you place this in your trunk in the middle of the summer (where your trunk is 100+ degrees), this unit will only cool to 60F. If you bring an infrared thermometer with you, you can scope out placement for this unit and get the desired fridge (40F) or Freezer (10F) temps you're looking for. you also need to make sure the heat exchanger on the outside of the unit has some "breathing room". I've found in the summer time, that I can place it on my middle back seats, with the heat exchanger side sitting inbetween the driver and passenger front seats, and if I point my A/C vent directly at it, I can achieve temps as low as 15F inside the cooler. You can basically make small adjustments to your vents to raise or lower temps at that point (once again, having a cheap 15-20 dollar infrared thermometer makes this possible/easy). Third - Realize these units use about 3-4 more electricity than their equivalent compressor based counterparts. This means you can probably run one for about an hour or two off your car battery before it's dead, but that's it!!! If you plan on using something like this long term at home/office, or especially if you plan on using it off-grid a lot, you may be better off with a compressor based unit so you don't run out of/use too much electricity. This unit hooked up to the AC wall adaptor will pull 72 watts of power continuously, if you leave it running 24/7 at a standard rate of .12cents per kWh, it'll cost you 6 dollars a month to keep it plugged in. I only use this unit on trips where I'm in our car a lot. Alternatives - If you need something that uses less power for off-grid or long term use, and you don't mind the extra 10-15 lbs worth of weight, I recommend that you get a compressor based unit instead. They are pricey, but I did find a Massimo 50qt unit at costco for only 300 bucks (so only twice the price of this thing). Compressor based units also generally involve auto-shutoff battery saving features, and better temperature control that you don't need an infrared gun to monitor ;-). Bonus tip - Amazonbasics sells some Large rectangular ice packs that fit on the shelf mounts PERFECTLY. I purchased some of those to create a mini-freezer within this cooler. Worked great on a 12 hour long road trip. Frozen food only got up to 15F, and the refrigerated side stayed around 30-35F for the whole trip. Makes this unit quite versatile. Have fun!!

Works well, but watch your RV battery!
It cools fine, but the major drawback is that it runs constantly: Unlike an actual refridgerator, this one keeps running even after it's gotten cold enough. As such, you have to be very careful when/if leaving it hooked up to a car or RV battery, as it will drain a 100 amp hour battery to below 90% in about 3 hours (since it draws about 4 amps). Many batteries will shut down if they go below 80%, which will happen with 100 amp hour battery in about 6 hours with this unit. So, IF you buy this, I highly recommend getting a DC timer as well in order to be able to shut it on/off regularly to conserve battery rather than having it running continuously.

UPDATE Caution!
This cooler is well worth the investment. I used it on 4 trips this summer for travel and camping. UPDATE; Now,, into the second season the cooling fan howls during the initial start up. Still cools Great once running quietly.!? I was unable to return the cooler to Amazon/UrbanInspirations ,,, as more than the 30 days had passed. I contacted Coleman and was told to check for dust in the fan (it was clean!) and to only run the cooler for a max of 6 hours at a time during use. Ultimately Coleman may warranty the fan even though I was 1 week over the warranty period Or I will be able to order a replacement fan from Coleman.

Bad Design
During my initial tests i was actually impressed with this, BUT over a period of only 2 days it stopped getting that cold. I think what happens is that frost builds up around the small ( WAY UNDERSIZED ) fan that is on the inside of cooler under the plastic cover. Most likely that caused it to fail /seize up. Completely defrosting it for half a day with lid open did not help. ATTENTION COLEMAN ENGINEERS: That fan needs to be bigger, faster, AND most importantly one that is designed to run at freezing temperatures. The little plastic one you put in there is going to fail in a short time ... period!

These units have short lives
My wife and I take a holiday each year. When it comes time we bring out the Coleman Iceless Plug-in Cooler for our travel snacks, and learn, each season, that it has quit operating, again. Occasionally it can be restored by changing out the rather expensive plug, but more recently the cooling module seems to be the failure point, and this cannot be repaired. The next step then is to reach in your pocket for another $100 or so to replace the whole thing, such a waste.
