Not the best as you might think or hope
I am an aficionado of LED headlamps. My first one was a browning, paid about the same money for that as this, and 26 years ago - still have it. That was dim, simple but light on my head and batteries lasted days. Then some Princeton Tec was my go to; until they just would get shorts, finally gave up on those. This one falls short of what I expected compared to other coast headlamps. It might be 800 lumens but seems unlikely. The headlamp is bigger and heavier than necessary - as if it’s going to be in a demolition derby, it’s built Mad Max like, which isn’t functional, it’s to make you feel it is expensive. But then because of their systems, it’s so easy to have the lamp or the battery pack not stay on the headband, just a pain in the neck to put it back together in freezing cold temps in the dark and just something their engineers should have thought better of. It’s basically the same as all other coast lights in the headband, but this thing is heavy and runs cords to the hefty battery packs, so it really needs a more secure setup. The twist focus feels cheaper than their other lights, and you need to twist it 720 degrees to go from spot to flood - way too many twists, and the mechanism feels cheap, like no resistance, this is not like other coast lights I have; those others spot to flood in a half turn, and they feel made well, this is cheapo. finally, the three settings for the light are ok; but again, it feels too much, like this big heavy switch is replacing a button - instead of a dimmer??? Hello? Engineers, really? Why have a dimmer switch that doesn’t dim the light, but just toggles between settings. All in all, I am disappointed. It doesn’t really hit the ball out of the park, but maybe the box it comes in is why it costs as much - that packaging sure isn’t cheap. But it’s only packaging.

Quality and Value!
I move trucks and trailers into warehouse loading doors (spotting) overnight. I like the light settings, as I can use the low setting to look at my clip board and then turn the light up to shine across the lot to look for the reflective numbers on the trucks and trailers. I wish they had an infrared switch on it because I have to turn it off when I get into the trucks to drive them, or that they would put a "dead zone" in the rotary brightness switch. the push button switch is pretty stiff and I am actually wearing out the rubber cover on the switch. the battery capacity is great, I can get two, 10-12 hour shifts out of a charge, mainly because I use the low setting 95% of the time and switch it off when not using it. when i was delivering, i would usually leave it on while delivering at the stops (30 minutes-2 hours) from midnight until it got light. and i would charge the light up every night for that.

Not at all what I expect from Coast
First, I have owned the HL6 and HL7 for years. Used them in the military, used it hunting, used it fishing. LOVED IT. Had a Coast handheld LOVED IT. But not this one. I'm very easy to please and most things that have flaws or defects, i can fix or live with. But that's not the case here. Too many issues right out of the box. Oh, and I can count on one hand the number of things I've returned. So, it all started when my dear son bought this without my permission trying be all sneaky-like. But I was to quick and intercepted the package. Saw what it was and decided to keep the new toy for myself because I hunt and fish and because I LOVE me some Coast headlights, so I said "Thanks little buddy for the really late Birthday Present." You can imagine the disheartened look on his face. But...then I turned it on and both of our disappointment began. First off, it was NO WHERE NEAR 800 lumens. I put the battery pack on the charger and while it charged I went and grabbed some new batteries. Nope... still not bright. Cleaned the lenses, NOPE. Put more new batteries in it, NOPE. Then I figured I had some attic work to do so I'd try it out in up there in total darkness, NOPE. However, it did get smoking hot.. and by HOT, I mean halogen bulb hot. The rechargeable battery charged for 5 hours, and the red light was STILL ON. I'm not picky, if the light is red but it's charged, I can live with it... connected and turned it on and I have a pen light that's brighter than this light. I wanted to love you, but the broken promises and disappointment was just to much. So I had to send her packing.

Excellent headlamp with Amazing customer service!! A++ for COAST
I bought my first HL8R 2 years ago and have been using it all day 5 days a week at my job. I have dropped it, beaten it, smashed it into my head on the lift/vehicle, spilled transmission/differential/engine oil and brake fluid on it. Thrown it on my tool box and just generally abused it. After two years of this, it finally gave it up. I was without it for 1 day before I realized I cannot be with out it and ordered another one. I only sent two emails to COAST inquiring about getting it warrantied and they no questions asked sent me a free replacement, but not only that, they sent replacements for both my HL7R's as well! I have had the 7R's on the shelf since I bought the 8R. Both still work but had finicky switches. again no questions asked from COAST, just replacements sent. The 8R is very bright and has excellent battery life. I originally had two 7R's because one would die halfway through the day but the 8R makes it all day and I like the top strap on the headband better. This headband design keeps it on my head no matter what position I'm crammed into while working on vehicles. Overall I would highly recommend the HL8R headlamp and more so COAST as a company is great to deal with and stands behind their products %100!!

Super bright light
Head lamp is very high quality and stupid bright and lasts easily as long as advertised. Only reason for 4 stars is the weight of it is quite a lot and the clips that come with it for hard hat use are useless to say the least

Works great and last long but not as bright as expected.
Love the coast product and it came fast. However I’m not sure about the brightness claims because my 700 lumin coast flashlight seems to be much brighter then this 800 lumin lamp. Still worth it if you work in environments that justify a good bright light and you save cash on batteries. Not crazy about the helmet clips though.

I LED filament Dims or gets more dull over usage time
Was brighter than a son of a gun, now after using for several fishing trips and around the house. I have noticed that it is nowhere near as bright as it used to be
