Excellent customer service.
If I have time, I'll update my review when I receive my replacement coffee maker. (*** updated ... see below ***) I received my brand new Capresso 464 GS at 11:45 AM on Wednesday, May 4th, 2011. When I got home from work, I opened it up (around 5:00 PM) and read the instructions carefully. Prior to first use you are supposed to run 8 cups of water through the machine without grounds or beans, and the filter, filter basket, and carafe in place. I did so, and ended up with water running all over my counter top and on to the floor. I examined things to assure I didn't do anything wrong. After sopping up lots of water, I put more water in and held the machine up to see if it was dripping from any specific location. Every possible orifice on the bottom of the machine was leaking. I promptly called Capresso's customer service number. I'll say right now that their customer service is excellent. You don't get someone in a country half way around the globe. I explained the situation: purchased from Amazon and opened today; tried the initial water-run-through and got leaks galore. Within 10 minutes or so, I was told a new machine would be at my home in 2 or 3 days, along with a return label for the defective unit. All in all, I believe other companies should take the lead of this one and provide such excellent customer service. However, when I see their product is manufactured in China, and the brand new machine I received was defective right out of the box, I am sorely disappointed in Jura Capresso. Obviously there are "powers that be" in this company who want to save some money by sending their manufacturing operations to China. This is not to say bad things about Chinese laborers, but, they work for pennies on the dollar, and those companies that send their manufacturing to China are sacrificing quality for quantity and the saving of some money. Is it really worth it when it gives your company's reputation a bad name? Jura Capresso, you should be ashamed to put out a product that you charge a premium price for, yet exhibits defects right out of the box. As of May 4th, 2011, I am only giving 3 stars, and that's only because of the customer service Jura Capresso provides. I'll update my review (if I have time, as I mentioned earlier) after I receive my new unit. *** Update: May 13, 2011 *** Well, I received the replacement unit in about 5 business days. Not the 2 or 3 days I was told, but since I still had an old coffee maker that was still working I didn't mind too much. I called customer service once again on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, and got a quick, polite response with the tracking information and was told it would arrive on Wednesday, May 11, 2011. It did, and I immediately put it through the workout. Doing the initial water run-through I saw no leakage. I then programmed it to grind and brew at 5:15AM the next morning, adjusting all settings (extremely easy) as described in the simple-to-read manual. The next morning it started up as expected. Sure the grinder makes noise, but to those of you who have complained about the noise level, I'd like to know where you could find a silent grinder of coffee beans. Stop whining. Sheesh! The grind appeared quite consistent. I suppose it depends on the bean quality, but the end result coffee was very very good. Also, I did not taste any traces of chlorine or plastic. To those people who make this claim, I have to ask, did you do the initial water run-through before first use? Did you use filtered water, distilled water, or at least the filter they provide with the coffee maker? I use water filtered via our reverse osmosis filter system at home, therefore there are vitually no chemicals and no need to use the provided filter. A second morning of pre-programmed grind and brew was performed with a medium grind (instead of the coarsest grind, as recommended in the manual for the first grind-brew). Again, it perfomed nicely and produced a very tasty brew! I should mention we had the aroma setting at the darkest, and brewed 8 cups. All in all, I am raising my rating from 3 stars to 4 stars. I still need to take off a star because of the poor manufacturing I experienced. ** Update June 13, 2017 ** After 6 years, the machine has lived out its useful life. The electronics on the control panel now no longer work. This is understandable because of the moisture factor involved. I'm happy it lasted 6 years. It really was an excellent machine. Unfortunately the price has increased too much to justify spending that for a similar replacement. And, by the way, I am still very impressed with their customer service. I do recommend it.

Experience after buying several over 10 years
According to my Amazon account, I bought my first Capresso in 2009; the most recent in 2018. I have one at home and another at a country place. I've purchased one (in 2010) for someone else. The reason: this was the most reasonably priced grind-to-serve coffee maker on the market. So consider this review a one-person longitudinal study. Here are a couple of facts-of-life using this machine over a number of years. The good: It grinds coffee beans of all sorts. It makes decent coffee, at higher quantities, as long as you adjust for its inherent limits. It lasts several years. The bad: It does not brew small amounts well at all. Since my partner gave up coffee (the acidity), I've been making coffee daily only for myself. It does a poor job, as I will explain below. It claims to be a 10-cup machine. Many others do, too, and they all lie: a standard cup is 8 ounces. This machine assumes a cup is about 4 or 4.5, max. First adjustment: If you want one "real" cup of coffee, fill the water to the 2-cup level (or a bit more to compensate for water absorbed by the ground coffee). If you want two cups, fill it to the 4-cup level, etc. You cannot make more than four "real" cups at a time, even though it claims 10. Second adjustment: You need to adjust the bean grinding level as well. When set to make one "real" cup (two on their setting), even when the grinder is set to 4 cups, too little coffee is ground and, worse, the ground coffee tends to pile up more in one corner. The result is, the water quickly runs through the portion with little or no coffee. My daily fix to this: flip open the spring-loaded coffee filter chute. This action spreads the ground coffee evenly. If I forget to do this, I end up pouring the resulting brew out. As noted above, I've had to adjust higher the bean grind setting as a matter of course: for 1 real cup (2 on their scale), adjust the bean grind setting to 4 cups; for 2 real cups (4 on their scale), adjust the bean setting to 6. Whenever we entertain, I fill the water a maximum to their 8-cup setting (four real cups) and the bean setting to 10, the maximum. To follow their settings will result in weak, watery coffee. Every. Time. Period. On a positive note, the coffee tastes better (less watery, more robust), when you make larger quantities. I find making two real cups (4 on their setting), while setting the bean amount to their 6 cup level, medium grind, to be pretty good...as long as you spread the ground coffee out in the filter before the water starts dripping through. Other quirks: While daily cleaning of the filter and carafe are easy, the rest of the machine, not so much. There is no way to clean the grinders. Otherwise, the process involves (1) spreading a lot of newspaper around to catch the residue (2) unplugging and emptying all the beans (3) turning the coffee machine upside down (4) forcing open the coffee chute (5) rooting around inside the shoot with a hook-like device to loosen grounds. Not pretty. Result: you end up not cleaning it as often as perhaps you should. The ugly: It is really, really loud and, because it (correctly, I understand) grinds slowly, the noise seems interminable. All this begs the question: why not buy another grind-to-brew coffee maker? Because I sincerely doubt any other one would do a better job, given the reviews on Amazon. The exception may be the Breville. I've had mixed experiences with Breville products: their hot water kettle is incredibly noisy and slow; their toaster ovens work well but have broken down sooner than a premium brand should (I currently own two). And their coffee machine is huge (and expensive). I'd love to own one those fully automatic espresso/cappuccino machines but spending close to $2K for something without a steering wheel seems excessive. Still trying to figure it out...

Good fresh ground coffee!
I wanted a programmable coffee maker that cost less than $400, would fit under my cupboards and had a burr grinder. This Capresso fit the bill. I've had it for about a month and so far it works very well. I did have to experiment with the variables like the amount of water vs number of cups, the grinder fineness setting and the "aroma" setting (milder, medium, stronger) before I found the right combination that results in the best coffee for me. The set up is easy, it's easy to clean. I use my own filters but a gold tone filter is included. It offers the option of grinding or brewing (but why would you brew coffee if you can grind fresh beans instead?) The first time I ran it with water only, no coffee, as per the directions, there was a lot of steam which concerned me. However, after that first time it never happened again when making coffee, although the machine does create some steam when brewing. There are some minor issues which I can live with: 1) The thermal carafe will only keep the coffee hot for about one hour, despite being "thermal." I do not make a full pot so this may be the reason it does not stay hot longer. 2) The carafe is a bit awkward to remove and replace and it is also difficult to pour out all the coffee without turning it almost upside down. 3) The grinder is loud (but only for 30-40 seconds) and the display light is very bright, things to consider when deciding where to put your machine. 4) There is also an annoying red light that is on all the time, which makes the machine look like it is still "on" which is not the case. So far I am happy with it, hopefully nothing happens to make me change my mind!

Works, but…
Works well. Some reviews have said it’s loud… duh, it has a grinder. Shut a door between kitchen and bedroom and it’s fine. Does the job however I ran out of coffee one day and could only get ground coffee- used that (changed the setting) and tbh.. the ground coffee tasted way better and richer than when the machine grinds it. I find it doesn’t grind it fine enough for the coffee type I get, which isn’t anything special (kicking horse). I’ve tried it on all the settings and it’s still not fine enough. Also uses noticeably more beans than when I had a separate grinder and coffee maker. Maybe I’m doing something wrong but I doubt it. Still a good machine, just unlikely I’d buy it again.

good item - nice and easy to set
Well this is the 2nd same machine I will be using after the 1st one broke down after 3 years and no way to have parts to repair it - Hope this one will have longer life (I order it with 3 yrs warranty).

Great coffee!
I’ve had my Capresso for a few weeks now and I really like it. It makes great coffee and I live the built in grinder. The grinder is a bit loud but not for very long and worth it!

Worst grinder and coffee maker all in one.
Grinder is super loud and does not grind very fine, coffee isnt very hot and the result is bitter warm coffee. I wish this was a good unit.
