Great overlock serger - but there are some things it won't do
I think if you're looking at this machine, you're either a) new to serging or b) impressed by the price and interested in the quality. I'm completely new to sergers, but I did my homework before buying this one, and for the price and the performance, this serger has a perfect balance. I was also concerned about being able to figure out how to use it on my own (so many people talk about taking a class) but within a day I felt like I knew it inside and out. It's setup is uncomplicated and I was able to get right to work. There's something to be said about passing over the machine that can "do it all" and buying one that just does what you need. 1) The "how-to" videos are wonderful for the visual learner. You can pick up the same knowledge from the thorough instruction book(s) included, but the videos reinforce the book. Watching the video on "threading" once, and following the line drawings on the machine itself, I was able to thread the machine in 5 minutes. (It's really not that hard - it's all color coded and the steps are numbered, but the videos help) 2) Included are two additional feet, one for a blind hem/flatlock and another for gathering ruffles as you sew. Together, they themselves are an $60 value. The feet are "snap-on" (when I read about that online I instantly thought of breakable plastic, but the feet are primarily metal with some plastic pieces on the blind hem foot) - the "snap-on" construction is very easy to use and solid (i.e. nothing is going to snap OFF over time) 3) It's very easy to set the tension and the manual has a very clear chart on troubleshooting uneven stitches (with 4 threads, there are multiple things that can be off with the tension). 4) The company description says that it does 22 stitch functions, which I think is a little misleading (it does the basic stuff and they show different applications for the basics). THIS IS WHAT IT DOES: 1. 3/4-thread overlock (uses 4 threads; best for use with knits or upholstery fabric) 2. 3-thread overlock (general use) in two widths - 3mm (using only the right needle) and 5mm (using only the left) 3. Rolled hem (great for edges of napkins, pajama bottoms, frilly skirts, etc) 4. Flatlock stitch (decorative or flat seams) 5. Blind hem THIS IS WHAT IT DOESN'T DO: 1. Coverlock stitch (stretchy stitch with two straight lines on the front of the fabric). If you're sewing for yourself (i.e. not selling what you make), you can fake this stitch on your regular zigzag sewing machine with a twin needle. It's not quite the same, but close enough for me. 2. Chain stitch (a semi-straight stitch, similar to a regular sewing machine but easier to rip out (i.e. good for basting) and a good reinforcement for upholstery) Other sergers I looked at that did the coverlock stitch in addition to overlock, etc. had complicated and time consuming adjustments to be made to switch to the coverlock. If you're going to use it a lot, consider getting a separate machine that does it (the Brother model is 2340CV). The one feature the 1034D is missing for me is the ability to do a 3-thread overlock and a chain stitch at the same time - good for upholstery but something available only on a 5 thread machine. 5) Nice little things: 1. You have the option of using regular thread spools (cheaper and smaller if you don't need 1000 yards x 4 of whatever color you're buying) 2. You use regular needles - so you can use them in both your regular sewing machine and your serger 3. It's really easy to control speed with the foot pedal - very responsive 4. Disabling the knife (that trims your fabric as you sew) is done with just the flick of a switch 5. Differential feed allows you to sew any thickness of fabric, line up stripes evenly, etc.

Missing User Manual in English with purchase
I like the Serger, but had to buy it through Amazon in Dec. 2020 during the pandemic shut down, as Brother USA did not have any of the 1034D Sergers for sale. It's a very difficult company to work with in the USA, and their Website is very cloogie--apparently you have to use Chrome or some other browser...in this day and age. Anyway, my biggest complaint is that the nice user manual booklet that comes with the Serger is in Flemish and French...apparently for the Belgian market! I thought I could get by in the French, but the French Serger terms are really bizarre. I have the PDF in English/French, but would have to go get it printed up at FedEx or something, since having my compute up with my other sewing things is a hassle. Apparently you can't get the nice small well formatted booklet unless it comes with the Serger :-(. During the pandemic, there was a run on sewing machines and sergers (for masks!) so I probably got the only machine available in the world. BUT, I wish Amazon had warned me about this.

Excellent serger especially for the price!
I am an experienced seamstress and had worn out my previous serger. I was looking for a replacement at a resonable price. This model fit the bill. It has all the features needed for both a beginner and those more experienced. Changing thread color is simple using the tie and pull method. The sewing speed is adjustable by the amount of pressure on the foot pedal. One of my favorite features that I did not have in my previous machine, is that part of the arm is removable which allows for easier access and sewing for things like heming pants legs, sewing sleeves to the shirt body, or serving smaller items. Definitely recommend for any level of sewer especially beginners because of the ease of learning how to operate AND the price is hard to beat.

Excellent Basic Serger
I am an older sewer getting back into garment making and wanted a basic serger. This serger is pretty easy to thread and makes beautiful stitches. The manual isn't bad but I bought Pamela Leggett's Serger Essentials book which clearly explains how to create the various serger stitches depending on what you are making. The machine is not very loud, feels solid and sews smoothly. While I understand this has gone up in price in recent months, most things have I am afraid. However, this machine is a true bargain even at it's current price. It comes with a standard foot, a gathering foot and blind hem presser foot. You can attach elastic without using a speciality elastic/taping foot but I purchased a Brother Brand one here on Amazon.

Wow
New to serging because I thought all servers cost over $1,000. I was surprised to stumble across this one which is so affordable and apparently so good. I am 71 and mostly make quilts but I like making upcycled clothing for myself now and then, especially using knits. I love that this stitches and trims all in one step, speeding up the entire process! Very impressed with this machine. I watched videos s showing how to thread it and that was very helpful, especially the ones showing you how to tie off existing threads to the new cones, saving a lot of time. I don’t find this especially noisy either. If you have been wanting a serger don’t wait!

Great machine
One day after the return window closed the machine gave a loud clunking noise and stopped working. I called Amazon and was very impressed with the customer service I received. They ordered me a new one that arrived in two days and it was free to return the broken serger. I have used the replacement almost every day for over a month and it works like a dream. This serger is easy to thread, easy to use and great value for money.

Brilliant, especially for novices
After researching overlockers on line, this model got the best rating overall for people just starting out with overlockers. I can't claim any great expertise, but this is a great machine. It is simple to operate and, most importantly, to thread, as this seems to be the biggest problem most people have. It comes with a very clear operating manual which covers all the important points and, even better, a DVD which actually demonstrates how it all works. Early days for me, but so far, I have managed to successfully accomplish basic sewing and have easily rethreaded the machine. It has a lot of features which are going to be very useful as I gain experience. I am not currently using it to its full potential, but that is down to my limitations, not those of the machine. I would recommend this overlocker to anyone who wants a foolproof basic machine.

Surprisingly easy to use
I used to sew when I was a teenager and after recently picking it back up I finally decided to get an overlocker. Very happy with my purchase, extremely easy to thread, instruction booklet is clear and reminder diagrams are printed right on machine. So far works very well, I've made one project and gone back and refinished the seams on several others. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is that the machine does heat up very hot while running which has me a little concerned for long-term use, but so far no issues.

Machine came broken
I had issues with the first serger that arrived. It did not work. Customer service was prompt and sent out a ticket to return it and sent out the replacement ASAP. It arrived one week later. Serger itself was easy to thread and a dream to use. I have used it for one month now and for the price it is well worth it.
