Nice machine,very disappointed in the packing
Machine was.sent in plain cardboard box, no padding, the parts were tie wrapped together Almost looks like it was a return. Not happy about that

Let the treasure hunts begin!
Got this for my twin sister for her BD. She loves it! We went down to the lake by her house and started looking where the water line used to be. (where people would've been fishing a month ago) Lots of coins and lures! You have the option to block out types of metals you don't want to waste your time with. (pop can lids, twist wrappers you find on loafs of bread) etc. Even though it's light weight, we should've shortened the length (which is adjustable) because our arms & shoulders got pretty sore after a while & the detector felt heavier. Let's just say that we found muscles that have dormant for far too long. You don't realize that, until you start using them. This Metal Detector is a great price & works very well for a couple of old ladies (63) who enjoyed our treasure hunt, and look forward to many more.

Where is the bonus gifts?
I opened the box and found my metal detector and a pin pointer... and no bonus gifts. I read the reviews and seen that bonus stuff was included and that was the reason i choose to buy it from amazon. I should have went to another website and i would have received more for less! I'm upset.

good bang for the buck
I bought this during a Friday Sale for the price of a Tracker IV. This is an excellent all purpose metal detector. Where it differs from other detectors in the price range: it is designed to go deep with a slow (slower than the normal 2 feet per second) back and forth sweeping action. This "slow" technique makes pinpointing (zeroing in on target) much easier. Adding the 4" coil brings pinpointing down to a 2" sweep. Like all metal detectors, there is a learning curve to get the most from this unit. If you want an easy set-up, put the two control knobs at the point where the dots change color and hit the "Auto Notch" button, you will get most coins and jewelery (you will miss some gold). If you need to find property boundary markers, set it on "All Metal". If you want to detect at the saltwater (wet) shore, hit the "Disc" button and turn the "Sensitivity" down (less sensitive) and use the 4" coil. Coils are waterproof, rinse after each days use. This unit is the same as the Radio Shack Discovery 2000. The Radio Shack owner's manual has more information than on setting up the unit and is available on-line. The Bonus Gift comes with an 8"x8"x28" carry bag. The carry bag has an outside zippered pocket on one end and an inside Velcro tabbed pocket along one side. There are two Velcro loops inside on the bottom. The pouch is an open "hip" or "fanny" pack with one Velcro close tab and a 1" belt that fits a 42" waist. The trowel is a nylon/fiberglass Fiskars #7879.

Best "cheaper" metal detector on the market!
This is the best deal you can get on the internet for a metal detector. I have been metal detecting for 13 years and have tried a few! You will not find a better one for under $400. I used to have the Radio Shack one that was the same and I loved it. Ever since, other metal detectors have disappointed me. This one is an improvement over the old version because I just took it to the beach and it worked like a charm. I've never had another low-end detector work at the beach. Most go haywire. The variety of setting combinations will allow you to work well in any area. I can get it to pick out coins in a trashy park, on the beach, or deep down. The ONLY drawback is that it doesn't tell you the depth, so you might have to dig more than you want. Of course, $500 more might not be worth that feature and the detector might not even work as well as this one. I plan to get a small probe to help out with that. It is very accurate though and I never dig a hole wider than the search coil itself. This deal comes with a great carry bag, find pouch, and sturdy shovel, and you can't beat that. The carry bag is worth $30 itself and I don't know how I lived without one before.

Difficult to use
Maybe I'm a newbie, but I have a hard time using this product. Seems erratic in it's detection. You can pass over the same area multiple times and get a different noise each time. Tried to use at the beach but it was constantly "on" but then when I turned down the sensitivity it was off to the point where if you panned over visible metal it didn't hit on it...I guess it takes some getting used to but its way more difficult than other detectors I've used.

Great, easy to use detector!
I got this for a gift six months ago. I found money and items right out of the box. There is a slight learning curve to get it adjusted just right so you don't have to dig up lots of junk. I back up to a city park. I've found several dollars in newer coins near our sledding hill and was very surprised to find 2 wheat pennies and a silver 1922 dime in the middle of an open area. It turns out the park was a fair grounds 80+ years ago. The great thing is that it is in my own backyard! It also worked very well on the beach in Florida. I found Keys, loose change and kids toys. Mine came with the free pointer which has come in handy while digging. It will buzz if it gets close to the coin. It has saved me a lot of time. If you get the carrying bag as a gift, that would also be great. That's what brought me back to Amazon tonight, I really need one. I don't see the need to ever upgrade to a different detector. the only thing this one lacks is telling you the depth of the item.

2 STAR at best. Very hard to get it set right to discriminate against different metals. Bought this for my wives birthday present with some hopes of having a little fun on our camping trip. Turned out to be aggravating using it. This unit might be alright for kids but not for an adult first timer with a meta detector, guess I expected more. The next one we get I'll pay more to get a better unit but it won't be a Lone Star.

Great detector for the price
Great detector for the price. Works as good as the higher price units with less options. You need to watch the screen more as it doesnt have different tones in all metal mode for different metals. Happy with it.
