General Aviation Survival Vest Winner!!
The quest for the right general aviation vest has finally ended. A former Navy vet I flew with over the weekend clued me into this nice piece of gear as he flew with me on a night instrument flight comfortably with this vest as I acted as a safety pilot for him. The military has proven and flown with vests with a similar concept to this for about a century and it has been written in blood that having the right gear can prevent lifetaking situations to exposure or lack of first aid and drowning. I know that this would never be mili spec approved due to the thinner nature of the material (it's not that much thinner though) but it breathes much better and provides support where the surplus vests do not. I had a vest made by 5.11 that was better for cameraman/journalism and was too loose for a proper emergency egress from a small cockpit (like a Grumman Yankee for example.) Not only are these pouches more appropriately placed for egress than the SV-2 or other military surplus vests but it is also more form fitting and better for support (think ergonomics) and movement around the cockpit. The pockets in the front I use from left to right (Strobe light, Gerber knife/magnesium fire-starter, and flash light. Behind these items is the Doug Ritter Survival pak plus and in the upper pouches, fast find PLB, Handheld GPS, Side pouches, Handheld transceiver, Emergency water paks (5), the other side, more emergency water packs (5) and a days worth of food with an emergency sleeping biv sack. There is so much more room and I'm sure that it's just the basics from what other folks will do. I do know in the heat crossing from SoCal into the Imperial Valley I am very happy to have the hydration system when doing pattern work or IFR practice and its 105F out. If you are thinking of over water flight and maybe attaching an inflatable PFD I was happy to note that the shoulder straps of the Revere PFD and this vest allowed for small zip ties to be weaved so that both could be integrated together and fit nicely. Again the model being the upper lobes of the military inflation system which have button straps (these can dig into your collarbone/shoulders if improperly worn) but the Revere vest is much thinner and lighter and the small zip ties aren't noticeable. In case anyone was wondering about over water flight and use of other PFDs and this vest. I personally hate the current military vest that myself and my squadron mates wear and if I could wear my general aviation vest instead (This one) I would in half a heartbeat. A four hour flight in this vest and and my back and hips don't hurt? Proper fit and load bearing is amazing isn't it!? The folks at NAVAIR could take a lesson from this design. It may not be as heavy of material but I'll take this over the terrible vest I have to use for work. If I'm flying with a survival vest on my own time and dime I'm going to be comfortable darn it! My wife is also a Naval Aviator has one for herself that I put together for her and she loves it for long weekend trips. So overall a success for safety. She may blush a little carrying it around and usually we'll get the question, "What is that?" I know that I won't be 'Joe Cool' walking around the FBO with this thing on but hell I'll carry it and put it on at the plane for the perks of safety. It's better to have an not need than want and not have when it's a survival situation.

works well for working/hiking through brush
Although I will use this for riding my motorcycle and mountain bike, I primarily wanted this for exploring in the woods. I needed to carry a lot of equipment to document old home sites and graves. I wanted to be able to evenly distribute the weight, carry water & food, and not get hung up walking through brush. This has worked on all accounts. I have been out on several trips now carrying 40 ounces of water (2 1/2 bottles), pistol, taser, 100 ft tape measure, layers of clothing, food, sharpies, note cards, camera, underwater camera, gps, dog food, flashlights, metal detector and accruements, marking tape, and other miscellaneous items. Everything but the metal detector fits inside the vest pockets, with some room to spare. It allows me to spread out the load. Although that's a lot of weight, it is fairly comfortable. I'm only 5'4 and about 180. It would fit a much bigger person. I tried the Troy Lee vest first and had to return it because the large was way too small. I moved the water into the smaller back pocket, which allows the larger one to be free for clothing. I can still carry 2 1/2 bottles of water in the flask. All in all, this is the vest backpack that I hoped it would be. I do wish they had added Velcro inside the front pockets to aid in securing a holster - the pocket is too big, so I've got to figure out how to make it not move around. Edit, 2022: The vest is still holding up very well. It holds a LOT of gear. I'm still very pleased and only wish it had one place to clip the taser holster. Otherwise, it is perfect. On Tuesday, I carried the following items on a 3 1/2 mile no-trail hike: water, food, 3 flashlights, crayfish measuring tool, camera, jacket, brushes for the grave stones, dry erase placard, first aid kit, extra socks, garbage bags, flagging tape, flags, snacks, phone, compass, id, and more. There was room to carry more! It is not uncomfortable.

Overall its a brilliant piece of kit that a serious touring rider would ...
Must select the items most needed for your journey. No room for junk. Choose your items carefully. The water bag sits in a pouch twice its size so a larger update is possible. Could do with another pouch over the right breast instead of some kind of patch. Pouches either side of the water bag could be elasticated. Overall its a brilliant piece of kit that a serious touring rider would be recommended to purchase.

Mint product. Well made. Expensive but worth it. Looks the biz on. Straps can be adjusted to accomodate body armour and a jersey underneath.

Perfect for DIRTBIKING!
Love this vest! Way better than a back pack! The water closing function is terrible but I learn to live. Good quality zippers and straps. 10/10
