Great tool with one minor improvement needed out of the box.
I think that this is a good tool, but with two shortcomings. One of these can be addressed but the other cannot. The issue that can be addressed is the physical connection between the wire and clamp. It is just folded over and crimped. (See the picture.) There is even a hole there for it to be soldered in place. I went ahead and soldered mine in place and would guess that those reviewers that had issues the wire came loose and was no longer making a good connection. I checked several items at different voltages and it was spot on with this probe. The other issue is that you have to be pretty much looking at this directly in order to read the LED. If you were working in a tight spot and needed to read the voltage this could be an issue. For my needs though this should work nicely. Overall I think this is a nice tool but would recommend soldering the wire to the clamp to ensure a good solid connection.

Its worth it
So took a chance on this because the snap on version of this is around $90, works good to a 10th of a volt, reads the same as my snap on multi-meter. Backlight is nice for working under a dash or low light. Only four stars because on the display the numbers kinda disappear if not looking at the right angle, can make it difficult to read in tight spaces. As others have said the rubber over the clamp is stiff, but I just slid it up the wire past the clamp since it is just a ground and doesn't need covered.

only works with NEGATIVE ground, not POSITIVE ground. and on 13.7v, the light is pretty dim.
This is one of those "have the designers ever used a test light before" products. Easily half of the diagnostic work I do involves hooking the clamp to a positive source, and using the probe on the negative. sometimes your looking for a good ground, other times you have a + and a - wire, and don't really care which is which for the purposes of testing for voltage. This unit DOES NOT operate if the clamp is attached to positive. So for you with positive or floating ground equipment, this will flat out not work at all. It doesn't light up, and it doesn't display anything on the LCD. Additionally, while the LCD lights up reasonably well (though angle of view is poor, as other reviews have noted) (tested with +13.7v), the "light" part of the test light is pretty dim. And can't be seen from the back of the probe body at all. Bad enough that I'm going to have to buy something new to use as a primary test light, and toss this in the back of the drawer as a backup. Astro Tools - you guys screwed this one up. :(

Not very accurate
This does have some resistance or is terribly inaccurate at low voltage. If checking a 5volt reference, it will read 3 volts every time. I double checked with my fluke multimeter and power probe. Seems ok above 10 volts.

Works but poor internal connections
I am helicopter mech. this is great for 28 v systems . Seems the display is fine but all the springs and end cap solder looks bad . lots of minimal contact crimps / tin to wire springs cause it to go intermittent , the coil wire is the quality of clothes line wire . If i did it again I would pay a few bucks more for the " better " model .

HANDY TOOL
Nice tool for quick read on DC voltage. Like the fact that it reads 3v - 48v ! When i really looked at it, noticed that the wire was just crimped onto clamp. Pulled out the soldering iron & made a more positive connection, but that's my own preference. The boot that covers the clamp is a little stiff, but no big deal. Clamp looks like it is cooper plated, the wire is not cooper. Over all it's great for getting a read on power to fog lights, radar detector radios, tail lights, fuses, ECT...

Made it better
Great product Had a few issues that I was able to fix myself. I fitted a bigger and better clamp as well I had to repair and make secure the cable where it goes into the top. Now it's a 100% product .

I had been hoping to find one of these for a while. I work on circuits from 5VDC to 48VDC, so a normal 12VDC test light might not always work. The voltage displayed isn't super accurate, but I wanted it more for the light and approximate voltage anyway.

Excellent piece of kit & it saves having to dig out the multi-meter for simple quick tasks

The display quit working on my third usage.
I’m an RV tech and thought it would be handy item instead of using a meter to to check battery voltage. I only use on 12 volt sytems so it should be a problem. 3rd time I used it the display quit working. The battery I was testing read 12.4 volts and then it just shut off. Grabbed my meter and checked battery again with it and battery read 12.5 volts. Very disappointed in this item as it’s not really that cheap of a product. Maybe it’s a 1 off but I’m very reluctant in forking out money on another one. I’ll consider changing this if the company sends me a replacement and it works better.

Great for Diagnosing
I have a test light in my tool box and just knew it was starting to go, you could barely see the LED light up and the wire was absolute crap. The length was not even a quarter of this one is so I knew it was time to invest in something better. These test lights are a time saver as it makes for quick and easy diagnoses. I really this one because of the built in voltage display which is a really nice feature to have. I wasn’t hesitant to buy this at all because it seemed and even looked like a quality test light and it wasn’t too expensive either as some other ones are. Upon arriving I immediately put it too use for some electrical diagnosing. Starting off, the voltage feature works flawlessly. It is such a nice feature too have incorporated into the test light because without it you would have to break out the multi meter and use that to test for voltage. Most test lights the LED lights up and you know you have power but this displays the voltage without having to test it with a multi meter, it is all in one. This does not have LED like others do, it just has to display. For example, I found out my brake light bulb didn’t work on my car. I replaced the bulb but still didn’t work so I used this test light to test for power and turned out only 9 volts were at the connector so I needed to trace some wires. It was that simple but I haven’t had this, I would of have to pull out the multi meter and use that which just takes more time. Pros: - The voltage display is great and is fairly accurate to comparable multi meters but is can be an issue when you are working in a tight area and need to read the voltage on the screen it can be difficult but it works well for I work on. - The cord is nice to have, it is definitely a lot longer than my old one and springs back when you stretch it out. Cons: - The cord HOWEVER, isn’t even super long so if you want to go a bit further it might be able to. Then I think that might be a job for a power probe but the cord is still fairly long. - The clamp has a black rubber sleeve over it which is great but the clamp itself it fairly cheap in my opinion because it doesn’t open up far enough for some larger bolts or even a battery terminal. If you did want to put it on a battery terminal, it may not fit because it doesn’t open up far enough. Also it does sometime fall off the where it is connected if you do tug it a bit. Another thing is mention about the clamp is the connection between the clamp and the wire. The issue is the connection of the wire just folded over and crimped (See Picture.) If you look at the top there is even a hole where the wire could go through and be soldered in place which would make a better connection. I haven’t soldered mine yet but I am going to. There is another review state that the wire came loose and no longer makes a good connection. This is only the spot on the probe that connection comes loose. - I NEED to mention this that this test light will not test for ground. It will only test for power and display a voltage. If you are going to be testing for ground I would recommend getting a standard LED test light (that has a fiscal bulb) which you can put the ground clamp on positive and when you probe on a good ground the bulb will light. Also if you would like to be precise when finding a good ground I recommend using a multi meter and setting it to the ohm scale to check for resistance to ground but other than that it will not test for ground and unfortunately I did not know that upon purchasing. Overall I would say that this is a nice neat tool too have in a tool box and is fantastic for doing an electrical diagnose work but unfortunately I wish that it did test for ground as that would be an all in one tool. The only thing I would recommend is soldering the wire to the clamp when you get the tool that way it doesn’t become a problem when you are in need of it but other than that it makes for great and quick diagnosing and I would recommend this even though it does have some slight disadvantages.

Poorly designed cord.
Very cheaply made. It felt real solid and heavy until I went to use it. The cord immediately pulled out of clear plastic body. It looks like its just a pressure fit. I think perhaps it should be threaded. You have to be able to pull it apart as there is a fuse that sits between the light/ digital read out and the cord. I have worked with this style of tester for over 40yrs. (Not this brand.) I needed this one since I bought a new 48volt Club Cart Golf cart. I should have just returned it since it is quite expensive for a hobbyist like me. I needed it so I just put a couple of dabs of clear silicone where the black plastic part goes in to the clear plastic body. and it is holding in place. Now the thing works great. Big easy to read digits. Seems to be accurate when comparing to a couple of other 12 and 24 volt testers. Not sure how accurate it is in the 48 volt range as I have nothing to compare it with.

Great for electrical diagnosing. Would highly recommend.
So my Mac tools version like this one pooched the other day, and to my surprise, they couldn't implement a fuse in there somewhere. The Mac guy doesn't come often enough to the shop to justify sending it to Mac, waiting for it to be replaced, all the while I can't diagnose anything without this thing anymore. Plus I'm pretty sure the warranty just ended, of course lol. So I was looking for a replacement of the same caliber, and found this one. It's basically the exact same thing, just the clamp is a little different, but way cheaper. Pros: The voltage display seems to be accurate, it really helps to diagnose, especially when a light bulb can't really tell you accurately how much voltage is there, and then have to bring out the volt-meter. It's doesn't feel cheap, and the black rubber piece on the rod is nice as to not ground somewhere you don't want to. It doesn't do reverse polarity, so your ground, HAS to be on ground. Cons: The spring cord is nice, if you want to test close to a ground, but if you have to go even a bit far, I find myself having to un-coil the cord alot. The clamp is somewhat strong at clamping, but it does do the job, if you're not pulling too hard. All and all, if you're doing a lot of electrical diagnosing, it's sooooo worth having this thing, if you can deal with the short cord. Especially for the price.
