Cured the problem of a recurring "dead battery" issue.
Our sears riding mower was having a hard time starting. Replaced the battery, but that wasn't it. Replaced the voltage regulator, but that wasn't it. Finally pulled the flywheel and was surprised to see the coil wiring in the old alternator was fried, burned, and gone! Wow, how is that possible when just putting along cutting grass? The first mystery was which of a dozen alternators was the right one. Luckily there are a few web pages floating about with part numbers and pictures. It seems that Briggs & Stratton uses different color wires and different color connectors for different matches, so if you pay attention to what your old alternator looks like, you should be able to identify the right replacement part to order. This replacement was an exact fit and cured the problem. Seems a bit pricey, but it's actually a pretty fancy bit of metal, wire, and insulators, and all with just the right dimensions. I would recommend keeping an eye on the flywheel "keeper" key when you pull the flywheel. I lost mine in the dust of the moment and it was a dickens of a job trying to find / make a replacement that was just the right size. Of course this always happens after all the hardware stores are closed for the day.

Inspect before use
Perfect OEM part, good deal, worked great....however, one word of advice; be certain to inspect the routing of the winding in the areas near the mounting screws, There are tiny plastic guard ears that protect the winding from contacting the mounting screws. The winding must be behind these little ears otherwise the screw will dig into the winding and short it to ground. On the unit I received, the winding was on the screw-side of the ears in two of four screw areas and the winding would have been shorted out by the screw. Fortunately I noticed it before mounting and managed to get the winding behind the ears. Potential problem solved, the stator worked perfectly.

Worked as advertised but...
Bolted right up. Plugged in and made electricity just like it should. My problem is that it makes too much electricity. I can't seem to stop it. Like, after I stop the engine and put my meter on the wires I still have around twelve and a half volts there. I come back the next day... there's still voltage there! So, I'm starting to think I have a perpetual electrical generating thing. Yeah, it's just 12 volts but, it's DIRECT current! None of that wavy stuff. My plan is to stack 12 of them and power my home with them. That sounds gross but, I can shunt some of the power to the neighbors if necessary.

Keep the box so you can return item. I did not.
Did not work. Bought new battery and the alternator would not keep it charged. All meter readings say replace alternator. Output voltage is less than 2. I am ordering another one.

Working Great...not fun getting the cast iron flywheel off which is torqed to 150 LB. FT.
After the nightmare of getting the flywheel off the 22 HP Briggs ELS, I installed this unit, which is a bit different form the original one wich was made of white plastic with black wires and a yellow plug, the unit is charging perfectly. The alternator gauge swung right over to 15 amps as soon as I started it! Thank you for verifying this unit was a superseded unit and is the correct one. Well packaged in the OEM box.
